Bull Mastiff ear problem

My 3yr old Bull Mastiff/ Boxer mix has severe ear problems. Her ear canal grew slower than her skull and has constant ear aches. Our new puppy licks inside of her ears and I was wondering if it could cause her harm. She seems to like it most of the time. She lets him do it. I was also wondering if there was anything we could do to help the pain. The vet just told us to give her Benadryl when they really bother her but it doesn't seem to help anymore. I feel guilty for not doing anything for her. Lately, she's been standing in front of me whimpering and I don't know what to do for her. Sometimes they hurt so bad you can't even touch her head without her crying.

Re: Bull Mastiff ear problem

Ahh Bullmastiff's must go with the name Ashley (also my name) -
i probably wouldn't let the pup lick the inside of her ears...wet ears make it more suceptible to ear infections (kind of like swimmers ear I'd think) - if the vet suggested Benadryl, I'd think it was more like allergies - benadryl is only an antihistamine tht helps to drain fluid out of the sinuses (also connected to ears through small tubes)...I'd get a second opinion from another vet...

Does she lick her feet or chew on them? What are you feeding her? Our Bloodhound growing up had ear issues because he was allergic to some ingrdients in his food. gave him skin problems and his ears would itch and swell a little.....Id get a second opionon as well. Are there no sterioud drops your vet could prescribe for the inflammation??

Re: Bull Mastiff ear problem

I think I would talk to your vet further. Your dog living in constant pain is not acceptable. I think maybe a new vet is in order if they cannot come up with a better plan. Changing food might be an option. Let's face it, it would be worth a try. I know allergies can be tricky but at least you would be able to feel you are doing something to help her out. I feel for you, I know it is not fun to have the feeling you cannot help someone you love. Poor little baby.
