Re: puppy food....

Check out the food sub-forum and look at the stickies up top. All dry dog foods that display the symbol are balanced and nutritious. It only matters if youcare about the actual ingredients used to make the product. some are better than others.

Re: puppy food....

So I can't find the correct thread...but this is timely and important. My old dog appeared to lose her motor skills, stumbling and falling down. She's sitting in repose with my wife at the bottom of the stairs in my living room appearing comfortable. Her weight isn't what it once was, and her hindquarters are light, if not atrophied. Did she have a stroke? What do you think. And what do I do?

Re: puppy food....

I feed my poodle Pro Plan, which is really good. They have puppy food in Pro Plan Selects as well.

http://www.proplan.com/products/Natu...ey_DryDog.html
this is what Sadie eats.

You can try one of these if you want. Change the food slowly, 5-7 days max.

www.dogfoodanalysis.com look at anything that's a 5 or 6 star food. These are your best bets... you want to limit fillers like corn and wheat, as well as by-products. Make sure meat is listed in the top few ingredients. Science diet isn't very good food. Too many fillers.

I will argue that Science Diet is the best food. There is just so many things to talk about and I had already written a really long response at a different forum. But I want to let you some quick facts about Science Diet. They are the oldest company that makes dog food. They develop a prescription diets. They are number 1 recommended and used by veterinarians. And they use the highest quality nutrients. Corn is a good source of protein and beta carotene and has high levels of essential fatty acids which is good for the coat. For a FACT it is not a filler and only a large rumor that people seem to believe because they think it is not digestible and is an allergen. If the ingredient is stated that it is ground whole grain corn, it is grounded meaning it is cooked which makes it highly digestible and is considered more digestible than rice. By products is actually another false statement people tend to believe. It actually cost more for companies to use by products in their food.
Science Diet puppy also has DHA in it for brain and vision development and now has clinically proven antioxidants. No other brand that I know of has that. I would highly recommend you to stay with Science Diet. I believe that is the best.

Re: puppy food....

Let me rephrase what I said... Science Diet isn't a very good food for a lot of dogs. I am sure that some dogs do quite well on a mainly corn-based diet. I used to work at Petsmart, and a lot of people fed Science Diet to their dogs. However, I know of a lot of people who have had terrible luck with Science Diet, which caused a whole range of problems. Even though I prefer foods with a high protien content for my dog (she thrives on them) I am sure that other people's dogs thrive on many other types of foods out there. I am not a fan of the ingredients in science diet, but hey, to each his own. Talking about dog food is almost like talking about politics. Many different ideas, and many people are very passionate about how they feel. I just gave my 2 cents. Dilsky, it is up to you to try different foods and figure out what your dog does best on. Their are tons of articles on the subject. My favorites are EVO and Orijen, mixing both can and kibble. I am sure others feel differently. Monitor your dog's coat and monitor your dog's stools (the less that comes out the back end, the more nutrients the dog is actually absorbing into his body.) When you find something that makes you happy and your dog happy, stick with it (or rotate with other foods... again, everyone has different opinions.) It's a very confusing subject, and you'll never find a consensus on the matter.

Re: puppy food....

And I could give you a book ony why science diet isnt any good - sorry but corn isnt good, I know very few dogs that thrive on that sort of ingredient. as for by products - who cares what it costs (probably another excuse to up the price) when you know what that stuff is.........well you wont catch me feeding it. And I dont buy the whole vets recommend it line - they would when they sell it at an inflated price...........

To be quite honest there is no perfect dog food - lots are better than others, some are literally rubbish - and some are the reason for poorly, badly behaved dogs, many of which are bouncing off the walls from being overloaded with protien. I can give you solid reasons of why half the dogs food out there shouldnt be sold, they certainly shouldnt be in our dogs digestive systems. Some people listen others dont - i am always happy to explain to those who are happy to listen - but at the end of the day people will choose what THEY think is best. For me personally I will never be persuaded that any commercial dog food is better for my dog than me making her own meals, and I have the evidence in that before me in a dog who is finally healthy after years of problems......its no coincidence.
