One puppy in heat

One of my 2 female puppies has started going into heat. I knew they were getting close to that time> 9 months and one week old. I can make sure she doesn't contact any other dogs in this time. Is there anything I need to do to make her more comfortable during the process? Any problems I need to look out for? I wanted her to go into heat one time before being spayed as per Shalva. I guess I'll go look for some training pants tomorrow and anybody know of any other things I'll need? I have the other puppy that hasn't gone thru it yet too. I wanted to take them to be spayed at the same time. Anyone know how long after its over, that I have to wait? Thanks for any advice, David

Re: One puppy in heat

My dog bled for about 1-2 weeks. But not enough to notice if you didn't know she was bleeding since she took care of it herself. However I have fostered a female dog in heat that did leave telltale signs on her crate pad. So having pants around is probably smart.

Our dog just licked all the time to keep clean and seemed a bit snappish with the other dogs over toys or bones.

but since we had obtained her as a retired show dog from a breeder, she was used to being in her crate. So I used the crate A LOT while she was in heat.

Remember not to leave the dog in the yard unattended. If she gets close enough to a fence it could be a disaster. I only took my dog out on a leash, even in the yard.

And even though they only bleed for a short time they are very fertile for about one month.

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in here. I've only just had the two dogs intact. And the one that we adopted just got spayed last week, thank goodness. She has a very regular cycle of every 16 weeks, on the dot.

Re: One puppy in heat

My 2 women are Mini Schnauzers. The one in heat has been licking herself a good bit today. I looked at her and she is swelled up a bit. I plan on having them both spayed as soon as one cycle is past, but I wanted them to go thru one heat first. They have never been in a crate except traveling in the car. They stay in the kitchen with a tile floor and a baby gate up while we are at work. I live out in the country, for the past month I have been taking them out on a leash waiting for this time and getting them used to only going on the leash. Do you mean she comes in heat every 16 weeks? If that were so, I may have to take them at different times to get spayed. David

Re: One puppy in heat

You might want to take them in at different times anyway. I know I wouldn't want to have 2 dogs post-op at the same time. And (this may not even be a factor for you), I would find it slightly difficult to pay for 2 surgeries at the same time. I could dig up the cash somehow, or put it on a credit card, but I prefer to space out the large expenses when I can. And it would be nice if you could focus your post-op pampering on one dog at a time.

Be careful about taking them in too soon after they come out of heat----I took a dog in to be spayed about a month after she started bleeding, and it was a difficult surgery, very bloody. She had to stay at the vet's an extra day, they were worried about her. I read somewhere you should wait about 2 months after you see bleeding, to ensure that the swelling in her uterus has gone down sufficiently. Though I'm sure someone here has had a lot more experience in this regard and can give more detailed advice about the exact timing.

No! Every 6-9 months, depending. Bitches vary, but figure 4 weeks (in heat cycle). You should wait for 3 months after her cycle ends before having her spayed.

I wouldn't want to be tending to two post-surgical dogs, so it's best to do one at a time.

Re: One puppy in heat

oh great throw my name into it lololol

ok as far as your girl in season......

first if she is bleeding.... get some sanitary napkins and some little boys tighty whiteys underwear.... she can wear those to keep the house clean.....

she must NEVER EVER be unattended...... so mark your calendar..... the day you noticed blood and count out one month......she will be the most fertile AFTER the bleeding stops and it is safe to keep her seperate for a good solid month..... and that is how long you need to keep her under wraps.... I suggest a tower with a moat.....crocodiles are a nice touch as well.....
but seriously
she can't be around any other dogs...... not only might she be a little bitchy but keeping her away from all other dogs is just safer that means even in your backyard.... even with a fence..... totally supervised all the time.... my girls in season tend to stay in alot more when they are in season and we go out for a few minutes at a time often.....

as far as comfort she is fine.....

then you are going to wait three months from now...... and have her spayed......

so you are going to spay at approximately one year...... they say 2-3 months after she comes out of season is a safe time to spay.....

yes its a pain in the neck
and yes its a little more work for you....but its only a month and then definitely have her spayed.....

oh and yeah its about every six months..... and you DO NOT want her coming into season more than once..... so watch the calendar and make that spay appointment

Re: One puppy in heat

The chart I got with our recently adopted (retired show and breeding) dog in October showed that she can into heat 3 times every year, every 16 weeks on the dot. And she is/was fertile myrtle. All of her litters were conceived as planned based on her cycles. The breeder kept her as long as he did because she was an easy dog to breed and whelp.

My neighbor's poodle has a cycle every 4 months as well.

Re: One puppy in heat

Thanks for all those insights. I am watching her closely. We are a little isolated where we live, course that doesn't mean a dog can't come by from a 1/2 mile away. She(Sophie) just started a little bleeding tonight, but otherwise she is acting normal. The other Mini(Sunnie) and Maya(my daughter's Yorkie is back visiting) is checking her out a lot since she has a little smell. They are all girls. I am planning on getting them both spayed and I will be sure to make an appointment asap. I am going to get some training pants tomorrow. Thanks, David

Pick up some self-stick sanitary pads at the grocery store - they work better than the pet pads they sell for the same purpose (less expensive, too). Carefree Body Shape pantiliners work really well, and will fit your little girl better. I've also used little boy's training pants - already has an opening for the tail!

BTW, don't be surprised if your other girl starts soon!

Re: One puppy in heat

Is there any problem giving a dog a bath while she is in heat? I thought I read somewhere that you shouldn't do that, but I don't understand why that would be a problem. She started about the end of December and this is day 11 or 12. David

No problem at all. Keep her clean to avoid infection.

Re: One puppy in heat

I want to ask this question again in case anyone has any updated info. I am looking for a Vet in Ga,SC,Tenn,Ala that can perform a minimal invasive Ovarectomy. They call it keyhole or laproscopic spay. I have combed the internet for anyone in my area to no avail. My one puppy is out of heat now and it will be coming up on a month past that time. The other one hasn't come in heat yet. I have already talked with the people at UGA which teaches the procedure. At this time they don't do the procedure, although they did do one on a lion at the Atlanta Zoo.
IhavefoundVetsinNJ,NY,Ill,Ohio,Ind,Cal,NY,Canada,C olo,Vir,Texas,Ore. that do the procedure but none nearby. If anyone knows a good vet that does this procedure please PM or reply to this post. Thanks, David
