Tail Infection - Any info please!

I have an approximately 2 year old boxer, adopted from Boxer Rescue about 6 months ago. Tail is docked, presumable as a puppy. During the past month we have noticed the tail being sensitive to him and him licking at it frequently. A couple of weeks ago we noticed that he was licking it until it started bleeding. We thought that it must be phantom pain or something causing this since the surgery was such a long time ago.

Tonight, sitting with him, I noticed that his tail definitely has an odor (like decay and urine) so I know he must have an infection. Unfortunately, it is Saturday night and my vet will not be available until Monday.

Does anyone know how serious this type of skin infection is, how it would be treated...is there anything I can do right now? I was thinking that a pet supply store might be open tomorrow and I might be able to get him some antibiotics if I knew what to get. It seems so strange for it to get infected all of a sudden, has anyone else experienced this???

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!!

First, try to keep him from licking it if you can. Second, try some Neosporin or other topical antibiotic ointment from the pharmacy. Then give the vet a call on Monday!
