Question Spontaneous Lactating??

We adopted a Cairn Terrier from a rescue back in August of this year. She had had puppies while in rescue, I believe in March. They were already weaned when we adopted her. Just now, I was scratching her belly and noticed her mammary glands seemed a bit swollen and when I pressed on them milk came out, not just one it was her four lower mammaries. I've never seem them do this before. Is this normal? Should I be worried? She was spayed before we got her. She hasn't been acting sickly either. Anyone had this happen, its got me scared.

Re: Spontaneous Lactating??

Hmmm...doesn't sound normal. I've had a couple of dogs that were adopted after litters and none of them lactated. I'm thinking that the vet may want to check a prolactin level on her.

Re: Spontaneous Lactating??

Lady has always had this problem. She is 11 years now and every now and then, her nipples are swollen and when pressed, milk comes out. I don't want to say that this is normal behavior but for Lady, this IS normal. She's had 2 litters throughout her life her last litter was in 2000. But as briteday said, having your doggie checked by the vet is not a bad idea.
