Parvo Recovery

My new puppy became ill withing 24 hours of taking her home. We went to the vet who gave her some vaccines and said she would be listless, within 72 hours she had stpped drinking and was vomiting every hour. We took her to an emergency clinic because it was the holiday where she was diagnosed with Parvo. We were told an estimate of $800-$1100 for 2-4 days of treatment. We received a call about 27 hours later to take her home.

She seems better, playing, running, chewing on everything, eating and drinking, but she has vomited 3 nights of the 5 she has been home in her sleep similar to how she was when we took her in. We called our vet who said as long as she is eating we shouldn't bring her in. Her bowel movements have been getting firmer, but are still sort of diarrhea as she finishes.

Any ideas if we need to be concerned? Thank you.

I'd follow your vets advice.

Did you get her from a breeder? What kind of dog is she?

Keep a close eye on her. If her stool is starting to firm up and she is eating and drinking then it sounds as though she is starting to improve. If she is not a lot better in a day or so I would call them again. Or, of course, if she gets worse at all. Did you contact the breeder to let him/her know? Hopefully, she is on the road to recovery and you can start your lives together now. Do you have pictures of her you would want to share? lol

First of all I congratulate you on doing the right thing. Chance was diagnosed the morning after i got him. I was given a $2,000.00 estimate and a 3 day recovery time. 7 days and $4,600.00 later I finally had a healthy dog. He threw up maybe 3 times at home over the next couple days, the vet said he has been through a lot and since he was eating and acting normal he is okay. The thing with parvo is it is not the actual sickness that kills them, it's the dehydration, and lack of food. So if your puppy is keeping food down and drinking, you should be fine. Do what I did and take the puppy to the vet in about a week for a checkup. I am glad it worked out for you, and believe me that is one of the hardest things to go through with a puppy. I waited 2 hours each day to see Chance, and it was only for 10 minutes each time. It was very very hard for me to leave him every night. He was given a 20% chance to make it, (hence his name) and he needed 2 blood plasma transfusions. Man that was hard. But now he is healthy!!

I am so sorry you had to go through this!! I just had a very similar experience. We bought our black lab puppy just before 9 pm on December 19th, and at 4:30 am on the 24th, she became sick (vomiting). Later that day she started having diarrhea and continued to vomit. So, my husband and I spent Christmas Eve night in the ER in the local animal hospital where our puppy was diagnosed with parvo. We had her treated and had to pay the low end [/color]of the 5-7 day treatment estimate (almost $3,000). Of course, the vet had to tell us there were no guarantees; even with treatment our puppy had a 50/50 chance of surviving. She was 12 weeks old and we couldn't see putting her down, and we knew they were the best equipped to try to save her.

The next day (Christmas morning), I called the pet store and spoke to a gentleman who was in caring for the dogs and he contacted the manager. At first they tried to avoid us, but we were persistent (spoke to their contracted vet who reported the illness to the state- parvo is a mandated state reportable disease). To make a long story short, the pet store paid for all vet expenses. Apparently, they had another store with a parvo problem and were afraid we were going to make a huge deal about buying a sick dog from this new store- giving them a bad reputation.

Our puppy spent 6 days in the ER receiving treatment and came home on the 30th. She is doing well. She will be on a bland food diet until next week, but we have slowly started to mix in her regular food. She has her appetite back and then some! We have to give her antibiotics twice a day for 10 days and they told us to give her a half tablet of Pecid AC twice a day as well (for her stomach). She has a follow up appointment on Wednesday with the vet.
