Hello,
Have you ever heard of a scent gland that 'farted'?
We have a 9 year old female Rat Terrier. For the last two months she has had the following problem: She'll be resting, or sleeping and she'll jump up as if something just bit her in the butt. Sometimes we can actually hear a fart sound.
She'll then turn around and sniff the area she was sitting in and then begin licking her hind quarters on the left side. If we smell her hindquarters we smell a strong musky oder. It is a not a 'normal' fart from stomach gas although she's had those (without sound) in the past.
We've been to two different Vets, The scent glands found on both sides at the tail end of her anal canal have been 'expressed' (cleaned – no problem found). She does not have fleas, bugs, etc. She has always had the best food, water, and housing. She gets plenty of exercise and love. Both of her caretakers work out of the home so she is rarely alone.
Vets put her on an antibiotic, then a steroid, fish oil, yogurt, pumpkin, - elimination of garlic pills which had successfully kept fleas off her, etc. She still has the problem and the vets have run out of ideas on how to solve the problem.
She does not seem to be in pain – sometimes she'll go hours without an 'attack' – other times she'll be licking the area every ten minutes.
If you have heard of a method to treat this please email us directly:
