| stone-former Hi, Have a 6-year-old Dalmatian, at 4yo-developed Urinary Stones, with parcel blockage surgery was need. Everything is going good now, low protean diet, (he is basically a vegetarian) and 6-month urine test for crystals. Just look to see if any one Ellis dog has this and what they do. Mostly looking to see what they feed there dog. Thank you for any info. Mark

| Re: stone-former You need to know what type of stones the dog has. Are they alkaline or acid crystals? |

Predisposing causes of bladder stones include pets that are not drinking enough or are not allowed to urinate frequently. Bacteria and stone forming chemicals stagnate in the urinary bladder and increase the chance of a stone forming. Mechanical flushing of the bladder, in the form of normal and frequent urination, will prevent this. Always make sure your pet has access to fresh water, changed several times per day, and the ability to urinate frequently. As a matter of fact, if you feed dry food you should be giving more than one cup of water per cup of dry food. An easy way to get around this important requirement for water is not to feed dry food at all. Your pet's urine should be clear, with no odor or color, and should be often. Sometimes these common sense suggestions are so obvious that we tend to forget about their importance.

| Re: stone-former Is your dal on allopurinol? Vegetarian is good. And eggs can be a good source of low purine protein. Check with your vet. http://www.thedca.org/dal_book.html

| Re: stone-former Thank you to everyone for your help. The stone problem was two years ago, surgery was need and every thing is under control now. My vet suggestion was, prescription diet, and ultrasound once a month (financially that is out of the question) this vet did a lot of talking, but I feel that everything came down to putting money is his pocket. So with 7 dogs I felted it was best to too look on the net and find out what I could about this, and find a new vet. So in looking at things I found out this prescription dog food was a low purines diet, 11% protein (and not being crazy about science diet) So I was going to go with home cooking for Oreo (the things I do for him) vegetarian and some vitamins added in but I just don’t have that much time. Have fond a few brands that make vegetation now (thank you) and I put 1 and half cups of water in his food (like you would with cereal) just to make shore he is getting enough water. Have his urine tested every 4 mouths for crystals. Do not use allopurinol, I do cheat a little and have heard that is not good to do on this drug, so I have chouse not to for now. It has been two years now and no sign of crystals at all. So I guess my question is if any one ells has this problem and what do they feed their dog |
