Dog acts strage after being Leptospira interrogans vaccine

My baby received Leptospira interrogans vaccine yesterday. Last evening he slept it off but today he his not feeling good.

The injection site causes him terrible pain when we touch it, he seems to be breathing faster than usual and he keeps his ears down which means he's not feeling good.

I called the clinic first thing in the morning and told me it was normal and wait at least until tonight ...

What would you do? Is it really normal?

Sorry, I don't have any answers. I haven't heard of that vaccine. Is it the "L" in the DHLPP vaccine? I know my vet doesn't give that to my dogs, because of their size, they just get DHPP. I hope your dog feels better soon. I would probably just watch him very closely and if he got worse at all, I would take him in to the vet. Good Luck.

I called a bigger hospital and they also told me to wait. We'll wait until 4 pm and if he's not feeling better I'll bring him back to the clinic.

It's not a core vaccine but our vet insisted that we give it

Hmm...I don't know the stats in Canada, but if a vet here in most parts of the US insisted that I give my pup a lepto vaccine I would have a big, big problems with it.

The lepto vaccine is known for giving a variety of side effects. There's not much that you can do about it right now (except perhaps for giving milk thistle for a week to help get your pup's liver back up to speed), but I would suggest doing some more research before giving the vaccine again so you can have more grounds to 'stand up' to your vet if necessary. (You should have seen the volume of literature I brought with me when my pup was due to be vaccinated ) Especially since your pup has already shown such a sensitivity to the vaccine.

He said that we should give it because we live in a big city ... I did not know that he was going to give that vaccine when we went there, I was rushed into a decision that I did not have any information about.

Next time I'll bring info about all vaccines with me at the vet. I am not sure I want to give him the booster at all.

Yeah. I understand what you mean. It's hard because they are the one with the vet degree and some of them really know how to twist arms! I got sucked into a combo vaccine one time a while ago that I didn't really want because I didn't have my info with me and caved because the vet made me seem crazy to question him.

Just recently I got into a vaccination discussion with my most recent vet about parvo vaccines and he tried to convince me that there have never been parvo challenge studies. Well....I was ready that time. I whipped out a study from a vet journal and shut him up!

I wouldn't give a dog under 40lbs a lepto vaccine. Its well known for causing serious side effects and even death in little dogs. Also in Canada unless your dog is living outside on a farm or has lots of exposure to racoons its not worth the risk to give lepto to any of them. I'd be very mad at your vet for not taking the time to explain the vaccine, and giving you a choice about it.

As far as the reaction very normal. I'd be watching him carefully. If he gets worse i'd take him in. They can go downhill very fast with reactions to this vaccine.

He's finally back to his old self, bitting our pants,chewing on rawhide and getting crazy in the snow It's such a relief as I was scared of loosing him this morning quite honestly.

But he won't be receiving any lepto booster for the rest of his life. I feel kind of cheated now that I know that 90% of dogs survive lepto and that most strains are not covered by the vaccine and on top of that, the vaccine is active for 6 months to a year.

Thank you all for answering it's been a great moral support.
