Radiowave?

I called the vet last week about having Eddie neutered. They said that I had a choice of having it done the "old way" or by Radiowave? I'm not exactly sure what that is. When I told them that I didn't know what it was they just said that its less invasive and its faster healing time. Not much information huh? LOL!! Anyway, it will be $75 and up. If I choose Radiowave then it will be an extra $40 on top of that. Also, there is a $15 charge to do blood work that they require to be done first to make sure there isn't any problems going on with him that we don't know about and also another $15 for pain medication if I want that; which I do want that for him (I can't stand the thought of my baby in pain...)

So my question is that has anyone had their dogs neutered with this method and what is your experience with it? What should I expect?

The only animals we have had to have neutered for years are the cats; so I'm really nervous about this for some reason...LOL!!

Re: Radiowave?

I *think* (I've never heard it called Radiowave) that they mean the incision will be done by laser. Apparently using the laser reduces bleeding and pain, and makes a cleaner incision. I have considered it for spays, especially for older females, but I've never had any laser surgery done on my pets. I don't know if I would bother with it for a neuter, since the incision is so small anyway, but it might be a good idea since Eddie is an adult. Only $40 more isn't a big deal for a one-time surgery. That is, if "Radiowave" really does refer to laser surgery. If they mean he'd be sterilized by radiation, well, that just sounds scary.

Edit; OK, so I Googled it, and I guess it's different from laser surgery. It sounds pretty good, I might spring for it in this case. Here's a link: http://www.familyvet.com/radio.htm

Re: Radiowave?

I think the radiowave sounds like a good idea, as opposed to the good ole knife and forceps...and for an extra $40 where it explains it's less invasive and has a better healing time, less chance of infection...sounds good to me!

Wow...to have Lady spayed it is going to be $230.00 plus the cost of anesthesia, and after care pain meds

OUCH!! That's a painful price! LOL!

I'm scared of finding out how much its going to cost to have Uallis neutered since its based on weight...at least I assume it is. My cats were a flat rate of $40 but there isn't a drastic weight range with cats, unlike dogs.

I'm not familiar with spaying as we only have males right now. I hope that our next dog will be a female and hopefully be already spayed when we get her. If we get a rescued female Mastiff, she most probably will be. Is spaying typically more expensive that neutering? I figure it is...

Re: Radiowave?

I'm not sure how neutering prices work for dogs, but for cats it costs somewhere between $10-$40 more for a spay rather than a neuter depending on the vet. I am sure this is because a spay is a full open tummy procedure (which as an absolute novice) I assume is more involved. To be honest my vet is a little bit pricey when it comes to surgery costs but he does a really good job and he is really nice and usually alters the strays I bring in for a WAY reduced cost). In my area a dog spay can be as cheap as $75 through the SPCA but the cats do so well after their surgeries that I would just assume bite the bullet and leave Lady in hands that I am certain are good ones...I'm sure you can relate.
