Doggy Dandruff.... What works??

My 5 month old Coon Hound has dandruff, the cold dry weather does not help. Any suggestions to add to his diet to help my poor itchy pup?

I give my two salmon oil pills with omega 3. Helps greatly with dry/flaky skin. Also a good quality food will help too, what are you currently feeding?

Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy Large Breed
lots of water, I heard that mixing a raw egg or olive oil with his food is good for his skin and coat. I don't know if thats true or just and old wives tale. (or is it tail?)

getting your dogs on a better quality food will help. Try to find a food that does not have fillers like corn in them.

Re: Doggy Dandruff.... What works??

Raw eggs are good too, I do that as well, but only a few times a week. I don't like to over-do it on the eggs.

And I'd seriously consider switching to a better food than IAMS. That's likely one of the major reasons you have a dog with a lot of dandruff. My old Rottie was on IAMS (years ago) because my vet said it was an "awesome" food. Yeah right! LOL Glad I know better now, but my dog too had a lot of dandruff, scratched like mad and goobery eyes and such.
If you have feed stores close (most big chain pet stores dont carry these) look into Canidae, Innova, California Natural, Eagle Pack, DVP.......much better foods. Or if you buy at Petsmart, their brand Authority Harvest Baked (not regular, make sure it's the harvest baked) that is ranked right up there with Canidae, but quite a fair bit cheaper. Ingredients list is good. In Windsor I think it is about $35 for a 40lb bag, and actually cheaper I believe than IAMS.

my dog was eating iams when we got him as a pup. he had horrid dandruff and the only thing that fixed it was switching to a food without corn.

I agree. Fish Oil has done wonders for our dogs coats. Make sure it's salmon / fish oil and not cod liver oil. I was confused when I first started supplementing and now I have a bottle of CLO that I'll probably rarely if ever use.

We also had a LOT of problems with corn.

You can get a fish oil from your vet, I use to have to give it to Zoe when we lived in Colorado

You can also add sardines to his diet. 1 sardine per day would be all you needed. It should be sardines packed in water but if you can only find 'packed in oil' you can rinse them.

Re: Doggy Dandruff.... What works??

I would recommend switching foods. The food is probely causing a majority of the dandruff.

Also, I would recommend sprinkling some Missing Link on your dogs food. Missing Link is a superfood supplement for dogs. It has all the omega oils and essential fatty acids in it. It is all natural and there is no risk of oversupplementation. Sprinkle the recommended amount (depending on weight of the dog) on his food and you will see his coat shine! The dandruff should disappear with time. It may take a few weeks with the new food and the Missing Link to see any difference but you will defiently see a big differnce. You can buy Missing Link at just about any pet store in the vitamin section.

You can also use flaxseed oil, salmon oil or any of the other oils others have recommended. As for the raw eggs, I've never used them.
