Unhappy I need some advice on Congestive Heart Failure

Hi everyone,
My dog Mickey (8 year old teacup Yorkshire terrier) has been recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure and collapsed tranchea. I have taken him to 3 vets and done an incredible amount of research. Our first vet perscribed 3 different meds one of them being lasix. He is on the meds now and the breathing is still a little heavy. I then went to a different vet and got a different opinion and they basically explained to me that it might be best to put him to sleep! I was devistated. I have never experienced this before..and while now he is still having trouble breathing and it has only been 3 days since the meds..I am not sure of what to do. The other vet told me to wait it out a week also. It saddens me hearing him breathe the way he does because the last thing I want to do is let him suffer. If anyone has had any experience with this before or know of anything...does this get better? how soon? What is the best thing I should do?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: I need some advice on Congestive Heart Failure

My cat was 18 when she was diagnosed with CHF. She'd already had Chronic Renal Failure for years, so this made treatment even trickier. She needed sub-cu fluids (injected under the skin) to keep her hydrated for her kidneys, but too much fluid made her get fluid in her lungs. She needed the Lasix to keep the fluid out of her lungs, but too much would put a strain on her kidneys. She was also on a beta blocker to help regulate her heartrate, and an appetite stimulant because both conditions lead to weight loss. We did a pretty good balancing act for about 2 months before her condition got too bad to treat. But while the medication worked, she did great. There were times you wouldn't know anything was wrong with her. She played with catnip mice, bullied my other, much younger and larger, cats around, and lived as normal a life as you could expect.

That said, I know many dogs with CHF who've had it for years, and it's managed quite well through medication. Treatment does require a lot of adjustment to get the dosing and medications right, so keep in close contact with the vet who's most willing to work with you. If his breathing concerns you, call the vet.

You could also look into CoQ10. Ask your vet about it. Also dandelion, hawthorn, garlic to name a few. A high potassium diet can be helpful as well in some cases.
