Exclamation Dog with Tapeworm?

Help! I could use some advice. We have a nearly four year-old mini Dachshund who is having some gut problems. We aren't sure what is causing them. Schatzi was spayed at under a year old and was very healthy prior to that. However, after spaying, her abdomen was never quite right and we found out that a student vet had done the op instead of our regular vet. Meanwhile, we had neighbors move in next door who shared our fence both sides, both with dogs. One was very clean, the other not, and we soon had loads of fleas in the yard although we sprayed and cleaned madly. We moved last year to a much nicer place and no fleas.

Now, for the past year, we have thought that Schatzi had something strange going on with her tummy. She would eat regularly but the gut wouldn't go down, just stay hard as if she had just eaten half a turkey. We took her to the vet and he didn't say anything about it except she looked fat (not the way of most of our dogs so we don't know why). He put her on Revolution for flea/tick/worms and we haven't seen any improvement in the tummy. We didn't notice any worms in the poo, either.

We are beginning to believe that she must have a serious tapeworm problem that may have started back in the old yard and went unnoticed or didn't respond to treatment. She doesn't seem to get much out of her food and seems depressed. Any advice would be appreciated. Her gut is tight and round and hard most of the time, even after a good night and a trip outside. Does anyone know more about the symptoms of a very serious tapeworm problem?

Re: Dog with Tapeworm?

You will see tapeworm segments in the dog's poop as the worm sheds bits of itself. They look like bits of noodles or rice and you can usually see them squirm a bit in fresh poo. They can be easier to miss in old poop b/c they dry out.

You can always de-worm her for tapes, though I doubt it's necessary if you've never seen segments in her stool. In really bad infestations, you can often see segments around the dog's anus or on thier bedding as well.

You can ask the vet. If it is tapeworms, all it'll take will be one little Droncit injection and she'll be good as new. Or you can buy over-the-counter tapeworm pills. It's not really a good idea to treat for tapeworm unless you're sure, though. Have you seen any little white things that look like rice on her bed or around her anus?

Re: Dog with Tapeworm?

Curious if you've ever had a fecal test done on her? and have you been seeing any worms in her stool or around her anus?

would it be possible for you to post some pics of her stomach? is it really large and/or descended or just firm?

Dachshunds are suposed to be very solid little dogs. My dachshund has a very firm abdomen compared to my other dogs. It makes sense for them to have firmmer stomachs since their body has to be stronger in the area to support thier long bodies.

She may have the worms but haven't seen them in her bed. However, she does exhibit other signs. We did take her to the vet and he wasn't particularly helpful - may be time to change vets.

As for her stomach (sorry, no photos I could find of recent shape), she is very unlike all our other 5 dachsies. She has a very large, descended, hard (not just firm) stomach. In the past, it would only look slightly like that right after she had eaten, but now it is that way ALL DAY, whether she has eaten or not, and sometimes she has no appetite at all and looks very depressed. Other times, she seems interested in her food but won't eat even half of the normal amount. That is why we suspect the tapeworm, among other things.

I would say change vets. It could be an obstruction of some kind. I have doxies and I know how they will chew on most everything. Fecal examine and X-rays are what I would want done
