Soft Stools

Hello,

We have received our Shiba Inu 8 weeks old puppy on November 20th. Due to unforseen events he had to eat Puppy Chow for a week before we got him. When we received him we gradually (over 5 days) switched him to Orijen puppy all breeds. Since then, his stools are very very soft (puddle looking). I know he does not have diherea since he does not have any accidents in the house and he only goes 3 or 4 times a day.

The question is: Should I change his food? I am not willing to give him puppy chow or any subprime dogfood. or Should I supplement him with Rice Pablum or any other thing? or May it be because he is eating plants in the garden??

Thanks for your answers

EDIT: There are no worms or blood in his stools. He has not lost weight or had a change in behaviour.

Re: Soft Stools

I would give him a little longer to adjust, since he isn't having a allergic reaction or anything. He's pretty young, plus that was a huge jump in food quality. I had to switch my girl's food over the course of about 2 weeks in order to avoid soft stools, and she was eating mid grade food and switching to high grade...sounds like you went from low grade to really high grade. Even with switching that slow, it took about another week or two after our switch before her stools became totally normal. Since he isn't having diarrhea, is maintaining weight, etc., don't panic...just keep an eye on it over the next week or two.

Good luck with your new baby.

Has the dog seen a vet since you acquired him?

Re: Soft Stools

Yes he has had his 9th week shots, and a vet exam (at the breeder's vet and another one at ours) and we are going back on December 20th. He was dewormed on November 22nd and today by the vet's recommendation.

I am a bit warry of asking the vet about dogs nutrition as I am scared that he will recommend us Hill's Science Diet which I am not willing to feed my dog (it contains cellulose!!)

Re: Soft Stools

In theory I love Orijen. It was however too rich for Ella, we never got over the soft serve poopies. I switched to Nature's Variety venison and millett and have seen a marked improvement in stools since then.
