I'm not sure if anyone can help me. But my 5 year old dog will not stop coughing. I don't know much about her medical history. We saved her from being put to sleep. She seems to only do it when she gets excited. She coughs and coughs and hacks up nothing. Even though it sounds like she does. So if anyone has any experience with this or have any thoughts on what I should do it would be greatly appreicated. THANKS!
How long have you had the dog and how long has this coughing been going on? Has the dog had a recent vet check?
As in humans, there are any number of things that could cause the cough and only a vet will be able to examine the dog and diagnosis the problem. It could be anything from kennel cough to an obstruction.
Personally, I wouldn't just wait for it to go away.
We have had Sandy for 8 months now. The coughing has been going on every since we have had her. She recently went to the vet back in May. But is due back in the beginning of the new year.
Thanks for your thoughts, and we will just have to wait and see what the vet has to say.
So she has been coughing for 8 months and you never had it checked by a vet, or brought it up to the vet when you went? If I was you I'd take the dog there tomorrow or monday and get her checked out.
This happened with one of our rescue dogs. When ever she got excited she would start to hack. It ended up being an allergy and she was put on medication. At first she went on a few different anitbiotics, but in the end it was just an allergy.
So I would go to you vet, maybe even before she is due to go back, and have her tested. It's a simple test and it could make the world of difference. Since she's had this since you got her.. has the vet heard it?
Well I got in appointment Monday to take her. The last time she went to the vet she wasn't doing it that much, like she is now. There is no blood, nothing comes up when shes done hacking. So hopefully she may just be allergic to someting. But I will let everybody know monday! And thanks again!

I would like to know what the outcome of your dog's coughing problem was. I am fostering a chi right now that did not have a cough when I got him, developed one about a week later. Vet put him on 10 days of antibiotics that didn't really help. Benedryl worked better but he still has this hacking dry cough especially when he gets anxious around our other dogs..
