| Mama just had babies, one is really small, anything I can do to help? Hello all, I just found this forum and was just seeing if anyone had any suggestions for me. Yesterday my lab gave birth to her first litter. 10 Pups (5 boys 5 girls!) well pup number 3 was VERY small. We didnt think he would make it through his first hour, but he did. It has been 24 hours now and he is still doing ok. He is active, but cant really lift his head. and he does feed, but needs assistance. I did make sure he got some of the first milk. Every couple hours I make sure he gets a good feeding off his mama. I do not want to hand feed him just yet, but am worried because he is so small. he is about a third the size of all the others. He has no strength in his back legs and all his ribs are VERY visible. He is such a little fighter already. Is there anything I can do to help, like maybe something I can suppliment him with? We have had litters before but I have never seen a pup this small. I have attached a picture, but it doesnt really show exactly how small he is. The father is a Rot if that matters. Thanks! |

| Re: Mama just had babies, one is really small, anything I can do to help? No we have not. We usually take the mama in a few days after birth just to make sure. We had a radiograph done at day 56 so we know she is safe as to having all of them out. She has an appt on Monday but it is just for her. I'm sure I can bring the little guy along and he wont mind though. My husband says to just let nature take its course but I'm sure there is something I can do. |

| Re: Mama just had babies, one is really small, anything I can do to help? A lot of the threads on the Health board end up locked (as in, they can no longer be posted on). That is what Anna is referring too.
None the less, I think you are making the wise decision. As the owner of these puppies it is your duty to care for them to the best of your abilities. If something seems really off, I think it needs to be looked after by a vet who may be able to solve the problems. |

| Re: Mama just had babies, one is really small, anything I can do to help? To the OP, please consult your vet. And please take some time to read other threads on our forum regarding breeding. Good luck! |
