Bladder stones! I have a 10 year old small mix breed dog (female) who has a gigantic bladder stone. I took her to the vet and discovered in an x-ray that she has a bladder stone about the size of a quarter or a golf ball.
I know there are two or more types of bladder stones and only one can be dissolved. There are the struvite stones that are mostly found in female dogs and can be dissolved with a special prescription food called Hills S/D can dog food. Then there are the oxalate ones that cannot be dissolved and are mostly found in male dogs, but are unusual in female dogs.
I am unsure which type my dog has, but I am hoping it is a struvite stone. My question is if her large stone can be dissolved using this special diet (one source says it can).
I know surgery is the other option but I am extremely afraid that she may die on the table. I read that it is a quick easy procedure and is usually easier than a spay, but I still have my doubts. She is, after all, an old lady.
I was just wondering if any of you could give me advice, or offer different suggestions. Perhaps you may even be able to direct me to a good source online (although I may have looked at a lot of the sites already).
Thanks for reading,
