Fractured Leg

I adopted a male Siberian Husky (Kane) from a shelter yesterday with a fractured foot. He is currently at a ortho specialist and going to be getting surgery tomorrow to correct it. The vet said he needs to be very careful for ~8weeks until it's had enough time to heal before he can interact with another dog.. I've had my other Husky, Nikira since she was a puppy and they get along quite well for the short period of time that Kane was in the house. I'm looking for some opinions on what you think the best solution to keeping them away from eachother because I know they will want to goof around which is a big NO-NO. I was thinking of getting a huge crate for when I have work (the dogs would only be alone for max 4 hours at a time) so one would have to be crated or separated while no one can watch them.

Any suggestions??

Re: Fractured Leg

I saw you today at the specialist office! We had the cranky german shepherd that was barking at your dog.

We take ours back tomorrow and if his next exam goes ok he'll be getting hip surgery, the first tomorrow and the second 4 weeks later. It is also an 8 week recovery period, trying to keep an active 8 month old dog quiet.

Our plan is to crate him when we have to leave the house and cannot supervise. We also take our dog to doggy day care and our provider has offered to take him a couple of days a week if we want to bring him there. She would keep him inside with her but in a crate when the other dogs are in. Which makes me think your crate route would be a good solution. Seems he'd be less likely to get into any doggy trouble.

Re: Fractured Leg

Haha, What a small world! Thanks for the advice we are going to pick up a crate tomorrow so when he comes home on Friday he'll have a nice little place to chill =)

I called the hospital and they said they are just finishing his surgery right now and will be giving me a call a little later.

Goodluck with your Sheperd they are sweet dogs =)

Thanks again.

Re: Fractured Leg

We just got Zen discharged at 10 am today and have him at home. We tried crating him with his e-collar on and he wanted none of that and wouldn't lie down. I think that even though he had room to lie down with the collar on, his depth perception was off so he wouldn't do so.

I took it off and he zonked out I hope Kane's recovery goes well. With the procedure we had done Zen can't have any activity for 8 weeks except to walk on a leash to potty. After just 20 mins of craziness today I don't know how we're going to make it through eight weeks!
