Smile Newbie:post-vacination very ill 11 year old Golden male

Any thoughts or similar detrimental results from like Golden Ret. owners on post-vaccination side effects? Particularly on auto-immune side effects post- shots, not allergic type reactions?

My dog, Jesse, was just given a "clean bill of health" Wednesday a week ago at his annual visit, was given shots-all the usual ones- & is now in local animal hospital since this past Thursday with high fever & on IV's with messed up blood cell counts.
Thanks for any help or stories of similar Golden post-shot side effects.

My vet warned me that one of Baxter's vaccines would make him lethargic...but of three or four administrations, only one made him groggy.

Isn't it possible that the shot just happened to coincide with this event? How soon after the shot did the symptoms start? That might be a place to start.

So sorry your pup is sick.

My dog Gracie (a cockapoo) was as healthy as can be until I took her about two months ago for her annual shots. A week later she was deathly sick. She was in the hospital on iv and was finally diagnosed with gastroentritis, but kept getting sick afterward off and on. Everyone I talked to said, no way... a week later it wouldn't be related to the shots, but I am skeptical still. I did change vets since... and am happy w/ the one i go to now, but she is now on strictly Hills id diet, and has developed severe itching and bumps on her skin. Like I said... she was a wonderfully healthy dog till she had her shots. ???? she's 3 yrs old. How soon after did your dog become sick?

"all the usual ones" can be different depending on where you live. There are certain vaccines included in combo shots that are more likely than others to cause reactions and some of us avoid those vaccines. Leptospirosis is one that is known to cause frequent reactions. Look at your receipt and see if it was a DHLPP shot. That is Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo, and Parainfluenza...I think I got all those correct. But we have some vet techs around here who might chime in.

Lepto seems to be necessary in some areas but if it were me I would find a vet who gives only what's necessary and breaks the shots out into the separate components, giving only one or two each year so that you know what the dog is having a reaction to. There is also another thread going here in the last few days about vaccinating older dogs, if and when to stop altogether. Rabies is required by law in all of the US. However viral shots are not required.

Yes, it is posible about coincidence-which is true in many issues of life & medicine. Symptoms started about 3 days afterwards-became quiet, withdrawn, fever & lethargic.

Yes, my Golden's shots were the DHLPP .

Thanks for the info. Your situation sounds somewhat similar.

Re: Newbie:post-vacination very ill 11 year old Golden male

Unfortunately, most vets give vaccinations on an annual basis, and give them all at one time, which is crazy, if you really think about it. So it shouldn't be surprising that immune systems are compromised when injecting all that poison at the same time!

I had a hard time finding a vet who would vaccinate my dog with one vaccine only (i.e., Parvo, then a month-6 wks. later, give the Distemper, then 8 wks. later, the Rabies), so I ordered the vaccines and gave them myself (except for the Rabies, which requires a vet). Thankfully, I found a vet whose beliefs about vaccinations were in line with my own. My dogs are both 6 yrs. old now, and will never get another vaccination for the rest of their lives. It simply isn't necessary, and could end up killing my dogs, or making them very ill.

I will never understand why some vets will vaccinate (combo shot + Rabies) a dog who is in poor health the very same day they spay or neuter the dog, but this happens all the time. It's insane.

I am a tech and watch my vet routinely give 3-4 vaccines (including the 5in1) at one shot. We see the most reactions in puppies. Small breeds and boxers in particular. Conventional vets will only attribute obvious, immediate adverse reactions to vaccination. They do not consider the possible long term effects of a lifetime of over vaccination. (ie: autoimmune disease)

My dog has not been vaccinated since he was 3 years old. He will be 10 in Feb and his most recent titers (done July 2007) showed antibodies in levels more than twice what is considered to be protective. I still do rabies every three years, as required by law.
