Exclamation Kids and worms..indoor dog?? HElp Fast!

We rescued a dog from the local shelter last wednesday and he is 2 1/2 and medium size. I have 2 kids ages 4 and 6.
I noticed last night that he has worms...they are 1/2 inch long, flat and rounded heads. YUCK!!!!! He was supposedly dewormed at the shelter...but he was there for a month after that. Could he have gotten it agian that quick?
Anyway! I am freaked out that my kids will get sick from this! I feel terrible b/c I have put him outside until I can figure this out. He is sooo sweet! And I want him to be able to be with us.
I called the vet and they should be calling me back.
What should I do?? I'm new tot he pet world and want to do the right thing.

Thank you guys soo much!

If they are white and 1/2 inch long they are probably tape worms, but you should get the dog (or atleast some fresh poop) to the vet and they can verifiy. Even if a dog is dewormed, after the medication wears off if the eat another flea (tape worms come from eating fleas) they will get them again. It is not only important to deworm, but deflea them. The weather is geting colder so fleas should not be a real problem right now. Just make sure the dogs bedding, etc is flea free and maybe get the dog dipped for fleas if it has lots of them or a good flea bath if it's only a few. Then it is a good idea to keep them on flea treatment year round eventhough fleas aren't a bad problem in the winter. It only takes 1 flea. If you do wash the dog and want to start a flea treatment like Frontline then wait 3-4 days after bathing to apply the flea treatment. Good luck and good job on geting a rescue dog. Also just use common sense as far as the kids and clean up the dogs poop after it goes and dispose of it as it can reinfest the dog or other dogs. Wash you hands after wards and you'll be fine.

Totally agree with the above post, but also you should know, that kids and doggie worms are not supposedly a problem with the tapeworms. Its the roundworms ( usual puppy worms ) that is of most concern with children. One vet many years ago explained to me that the way a child would get problems from round worms passed by a dog is if the child was crawling around on the floor, or whatever, crawled through or to the poop, handled it or smeared it on his hands, then put his hands to his mouth. Still, its for sure best to keep the dog dewormed anyway, I would take a sample to the vet for checking, on the other hand they have such good dewormers nowadays, some vets hardly even bother checking nowadays, they just do a good, general deworming. Tapes as mentioned above, can always be a problem since they are connected with fleas. It only takes one flea, and a dog can start shedding tape segments months after he has developed the tapeworm inside, so on going monitoring for tapeworms is a good thing. My understanding also is that with the more adult dog systems, if they have been fully and properly dewormed as puppies, will not be as susceptible to roundworms. Not a guarantee, but a factor to consider. Apparently roundworms do not thrive as well in an adult dog as they do in a puppy, so once they are properly cleaned out they are not as likely to reoccur.
