Scoots butt & no worms

So my Papillon scooted her little behind, was tested & of course had a tapeworm. Medication took it away and scooting stopped. She started scooting again, tested and NOTHING, no worms. Scooting then stopped for a few weeks again. Well it started back up again. What the heck?? The vet bills are getting expensive. Why would she scoot with not having worms? Thanks!

You might want to have her checked to see if she has impacted anal glands. Usually they drain on thier own but sometimes they have to be expressed. They could have drained on their own at the times she stops scooting then get impacted again later...I think scooting helps relieve the pressure. MJS

The dogs anal glands need to be released. Your local Veterinarian will do it for cheap.

The last time she scooted and had no worms they checked the anal glands and they did not need to be expressed. My new little fur-baby is just so high maintenance it seems sometimes.

Is it possible her little booty itches if she is having a grain allergy, b/c she itches alot I think and I was going to change her to a grain free diet.

Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, after problems with tapeworms or anals go away, the dog just develops a habit of scooting. Some find the sensation enjoyable. *shrug*

Sometimes, too, they irritate their bottoms by scooting, and scooting more relieves the feeling, but makes it worse, so they scoot more, yadda, yadda, yadda. You can try applying a little hydrocortisone cream to her bum.

I really don't feel a dog should be eating grain as it is not a natural food for them. In the wild they do not eat it. It is used as a cheap filler in commercial dog food, and dogs as well as people can be allergic to grain.

Re: Scoots butt & no worms

I keep my paps clipped around the anus and glands. It seems to help with the scooting thing. It sounds like you've taken a good look down there...one of the other reasons my paps will scoot is when they have a little "almond roca" stuck to their fur down there.

Thin skin (around the anus, feet and ears) is a common place for allergy problems to appear. It could be allergies, soft stools that need "wiped", anal glands, or habit...

You'll have to continue to watch your pup closely to see if you can figure out the cause...

Baby wipes are a good/benign way to wipe around the bum-bum after your pup does #2.
