Question Refusal to eat & chronic vomiting

Help me. My 14 year old female whippet has refused almost all food for close to 2 weeks. This started after a day in the yard where I caught her in a flower bed and noticed her eating weeds and grass. She started vomiting the next day. Would be better one day, worse the next. She has been to vet for fluid iv's, blood tests and x-rays. Vet can find nothing wrong. She now has diarrhea also. I can get her to eat very limited amounts of prescription dog food. Vomits up chicken & rice and any of her dry food. Vet suggests referral to specialist for ultrasounds or barium x-rays. Don't know if that is advisable or feasible due to her age and possible expense. I have already spent $400 and they can't find anything wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions or previous experience with this?

Hi, I would take her to another vet or the same vet(if he's a great vet) and run all the tests again. Try a little oatmeal and see if she will eat a bit of that. She must be quite thin if she's been doing this for 2 weeks? Is she drinking water ok? Peeing ok? Take her to another vet and run the tests all over again. Get a second opnion, it couldn't hurt.

If your vet has referred you to a specialist, that's probably where you should go for your second opinion. The specialist will be able to review the blood work done by your veterinarian and determine if more blood work is indicated of if the ultrasound is needed. Don't worry about letting the specialist know if there is a budget. I just think it would be better to spend $400 dollars with the specialist than $400 on repeating the tests already done.
