Clean Teeth

What do you do to clean teeth? (Besides brushing) Any tips on chew or toys that work will help.

Nilone bones will work and Denta bones. Star gets one every week.

Raw bones are great for cleaning teeth.

Even the sterilized white marrow bones you buy at the pet store are great for teeth cleaning.

I stay away from any kind of cooked bones. But my butcher is a great resource for raw bones. He always finds me something with a bit of meat left on it so the dogs get a good gnawing for a couple of hours. A nice 8" shank bone with the marrow is especially nice. And then you can re-stuff the center with peanut butter or whatever when the marrow is gone.

I also scale my dogs teeth. They do love bones as well. LOL The vet told me that my soon to be 13 year old has the teeth of a 3 year old. Sadly, my little 2 1/2 year old has a bad bite and his teeth are always more of a problem.

inga, do you polish the teeth after you scale them? if you dont, you leave tiny grooves on the teeth and it makes it easier to have plaque build up. just wondering.... i brush once or twice a week, and shes constantly chewing on bones. also toys like those large tug ropes with knots at either end work well for helping to clean teeth, its a fun way to do it too.

I will look into the bones. They had been getting pig hooves to clean their teeth. But pig hooves are digestable, and I have started to fear they will bloat. Raw bones should be a nice alternative.

That is what I thought. I have just never called it that. I do scale Dusk's teeth. Even with the best chews in the world he still gets tarter in the crevises of his back teeth.

I brush my dog's teeth once a week but it's hard because he thinks it's a great tasty treat so he just tries to eat the toothbrush and toothpaste. Makes a huge mess.

I also get him big beef bones with some meat still on to chew on, big bison knuckles from the pet store, and twistix (they're green and white wheat free chew sticks that disolve plaque and are edible).

My vet told me not to put the toothpaste on the brush. To just brush with a little water on the brush. I then put the tooth paste on my finger a smear it over the teeth. This way you don't have a dog that is constantly chewing on the brush.
