Just cam Back from the Vet...

I brought my poodle, Eddy, back from the vet a few hours ago, and he is just really low. Eddy is usually such a ball of energy, running and jumping on the furniture, but now, he looks depressed.
He was at the vet for his yearly check up: Rabies, Parvo check, heartworm, etc. And He had to spend the night there, but it's like he's a totally different dog.. Is this normal, or do you think that something might have gone wrong??
Any advice would help.

I'm not sure why exactly he had to spend the night for his yearly check up... but could you please explain?

Now... when I have boarded my dogs Guera and Bingo, every time they come back they are a bit shell shock for about the first day back. I really think it has to do with the fact they are not used to so many dogs going wild in their kennels for so long, then they have to be confined to kennels, they are around many people they do not know, and so on. The first time I boarded Guera, she came back pretty sad... she was really excited to be home with me, but I think she really hated being around people she did not know for about a week and a half.

I am not saying that something bad could have happened, but I do know that some dogs do come back a little scared and shell shock after being away from someone they know for so long.

How old is he? how many times has he been to a vet before? and how many times has he been away from you and how long?

Spending the night for an annual check and vaccinations is very, very strange, and should have been a 20-min. office visit, max! Please clarify for us just what Eddy was seen for.

I find this whole thing completely off. Unless there is some sort of emergency, the dog should not be staying overnight just for shots.

I'm curious (answer if want), what the cost was for all of this.

I just had one of many bad experiences with vets (I'm on my 6th in 16 years).

My regular vet (who I trust and love), and another vet who I consult with (also trust and love) sent me to an alternate vet to have an ultrasound done on my dog (UTI issues, long story).

Appointment was specifically made for the ultrasound ($500.00), by me and regular vet. I get there, new vet comes in and gives a 15 minute consultation ($190.00), and says ultrasound is going to do no good, and dog needs extensive testing ($1300.00). All of this despite my regular vet consulting with him specifically about ultrasound and my specific appointment.

Needless to say, I did not have the testing done, and vets are now discussing what needs to be done and why this happened.

The $190.00 was paid, but I am not happy. I feel like I was being pressured into doing something that there was no way was going to happen without my extensive research on what was going to take place with my dog. I have also heard stories about large multi-veterinary practices being pressured by the owner of the clinic that have quotas that they must meet financially each week and month.

Most of us are at the mercy of vets and what they say about the health of our pets. We simply don't know about health issues, and just want our pets well again. Even after all I've been through over the past 16 years with vets and dealing with extensive dog health issues, this threw me off. Looking back, I should have put a stop to the consultation as it started. I thought it was part of the ultrasound testing process (I did ask very specific questions before going about what was going to take place, they said one information sheet needed to be filled out) and the cost.

One of those vaccines can make a pup feel a little lethargic.

My vet told me this at Baxter's first appointment and there was no sign of him slowing down then. When we went this last time, he was definitely more chill afterwards.

I dropped him off pretty late in the day, and he had a grooming appointment the next day, so they just kept him over night. By the way, the total amount for the vet visit with the groom was $194.00. I understand that being away from home would have been a large shock, but I thought he'd be used to being in a kennel with lots of dogs, seeing as we got him from a sheltar and had been there for almost a whole year. Sometimes we leave him at home for a couple of days alone, and a neighbour goes into the back yard to feed him. I just hope he can feel better, I want my Eddy back.
