Bite not Dog Callar

I have been dealing with Teddie's bitting and I feel bad he has to wear a cone also all day sometimes. I've had him on different medications and I've take to the vet several times.

He chews until he is raw and bleeding is I can't get there in time to stop him. It takes as little as 10 seconds for him to literally chew his leg raw. Then we have mats and then we have to go through mean Mr. Teddie because he hates to be groomed. For the past, probably, two months he's been wearing a cone to sleep in, some times play in and I feel terrible, but it's the only way I've been able to keep him from chewing. On a few ocations he has even gotten to his bum around the cone so I'm at my wits end.

I came across the Bite Not Dog Callar and thought it was great idea. He will be able to eat, play, go outside ect and I would have to be right there. Now of course I wouldn't just leave it on all day because it's a better choice.

I wanted to know if any one else has used on of these and how well it works. Teddie is a Shih Tzu for those of you who haven't seen any threads on him. I also thought it'd be better on his peripheral vision because hes not looking through the cone all the time.

What are your opinions on this product and would you use it?

I have changed to Solid Gold food and have him on distilled water so there is no chlorine at all. I have tried benadryl and a different medication from the vet.

I have one and I hate it...... the dogs hate it....
couple of problems wtih it..... if your dogs neck is shorter than what they think he/she should have it is hard to get on and terribly uncomfortable for them....

they have to wear this harness type thing to prevent them from pulling it off.... I don't like them wearing that in a crate when I am not around as I do think it could present a strangulation issue.

I have one .... I don't use it...... my dogs seem happier in the cone..... and I get better radio reception.

Wow really?

I thought it looked like such a great idea, but wasn't sure I should spend the money and hate it. I'm glad I asked them. Seeing as he does have a shorter neck. I was actually thinking it would be a little big for him.

Thanks, Merrit

Re: Bite not Dog Callar

I got one for Shippo, because he couldn't even eat or drink with the cone-type collars, he constantly was running into things, and it got to the point where he wouldn't even move anymore with it on. I had a BiteNot overnighted, and it was the best 40 bucks I EVER spent. I put it on him, and he instantly came alive again, was able to eat and drink without spilling his food and water all over himself, was able to actually WALK... only thing he wasn't able to do was bite at what remained of his testicles which was perfect lmfao...

So yeah, I give it a 10. I'm storing it away for emergencies.

Sounds like it depends on the dogs neck. Maybe you should send a message to the company and ask them what they recommend for a Shih Tzu.

Anela is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Bite not Dog Callar

If your dog is damaging himself from biting, there has to be a reason. I'd say your vet is missing something.

A food allergy comes to mind, but anxiety also could be the problem. If you are going to feed a good hypo allergic food, it needs to be one with no grains (venison and potato or duck and potato). It takes about 6 weeks for old food to leach out of dogs body to see if the hypo allergic food is working.

Anxiety can be treated with Doxipin.

I would be extremely concerned about this overall situation. My experience when having any type of skin issues is to go to a veterinary dermatologist.

Re: Bite not Dog Callar

Baxter had a floppy e-collar after surgery and even though it was the smallest size, he tripped on it fairly often. After a few days of watching him tumble over himself, I ordered a Bite Not Collar and he seemed to do much better.

Now, he wasn't really interested in scratching his incision, but I used it just to be on the safe side. I only used the chest strap for the first few days.

I don't think it is meant to be a permanent thing, though. I think addressing the cause of the biting is a better idea than slapping this on him.
