Unhappy Cushings Disease Treatment - Discuss

Our 11 year old Schnauzer was recently diagnosed with Cushings Disease. I would love to hear from anyone who has gone through this with their dog and how they pursued treatment. It seems like the treatment can be as bad as the disease.

Hi,

I am sorry to hear about your Schnauzer diagnosis. My Chow Chow (11 and 1/2) is in a similar predicament. She has a mass in her adrenal gland and all the signs of Cushings. She appears to be quite in the midst of it. I am recommended surgery or meds, but there are no guarantees either way. Meds are more for the pituitary kind of Cushings. I don't know what to do either. I am at a loss for direction.

I noticed your post was in Oct. Hopefully you found a good answer.

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear about both your dogs. Try to find a Holistic Vet, they are out there. I know there are Homeopathic treatments for both types of Cushings as a friend of mine had a horse with Cushings.

I honestly don't know enough to about the disease to help you further, but I will keep both your dogs in my prayers and send some positive vibes your way.

Holistic for Cushings

Thank you Carla,

I will try that route. I have been looking online too. If anyone knows where I may be directed for homeopathic remedies for Cushings Disease (mass is in the adrenal gland), please let me know.

It does look like you may still need to have the tumor removed. Ask the vet to stay away from ACE, as it can have some bad effects especilly with older dogs and there are safer anesthesias out there. Be sure the vet does a complete work-up on her to make the surgery as safe as possible. I know the surery is no gaurantee, but it may well give her more time with you.

Adrenal tumor

Hi Carla,

Thank you so much for the sites. I am still concerned about surgery, as Chow Chows have to be monitored carefully with anethesias. I am also concerned with her age and how she will handle surgery. Any thoughts? Thank you so much for your suggestions and communication. It is often lonely in my work world as far as the love of pets goes. People I work with don't understand my depth of love for my dog and don't want to hear my woes.

Mastiffs have many of the same problems with anesthesia, yes, age does play a huge role in the recovery. I think if you'e going to have the surgery you should check into the local vet schools and find a specialist to do the job. Do still look into Holistic vets too, they may have alternatives that will at least bring down the size of the tumor and increase your dogs chances. Last, but not least, always be prepared to what's best if you see your dog suffering.
