Parvo help

This is my first post, so I suppose a "hello" would be in order, so HELLO!

Alright, so I have a question. I searched the forums and didn't find much information, so I'm hoping this will give me some specific answers.

About three months ago my husband and I bought a puppy from a supposedly reputable breeder. This puppy died within 30 hours of us bringing it home. We took her (Sadie) in for an emergency visit where she was tested for everything, specifically Parvovirus and Coronavirus, since she was displaying symptoms for both of these. She tested negative for both. In fact, she tested negative for Parvo three separate times.

So, because of these test results, we decided to get another puppy from a personal friend. She is the most conscientious breeder we've ever met and since she felt bad about the first puppy she sold us a chihuahua for a lot less than standard pricing. She is completely trustworthy, and in hindsight we should have bought from her in the first place. The second puppy (Emie) started displaying symptoms similar to Sadie's within about 24 hours. We immediately took her to the MSU veterinary school's emergency clinic where she tested positive for parvo.

We talked to this vet and he said that it was possible that Sadie had tested negative for parvo because of the large amount of blood in her stool. He said it was very possible that our home had been infected with the parvo virus. We did notice that Emie was digging and chewing in a spot that Sadie had had an accident, and we think this is how it got transferred.

After this we decided to hold off on getting another puppy since we were about to move to California.

Well, this was all about 3 months ago, and we are now settled in CA. We have found another chihuahua that we would like, but the heartbreak of the first two has us scared that the parvovirus may be in our clothes or furniture. I cannot go through another poor puppy dying. Can anyone recommend a method/product for us to disinfect our apartment with?

We have been looking at HealthGuard Laundry Additive, which the company said would be effective mixed in a spray bottle and applied to everything in our apartment. However, the only reviews we have found only discuss its efficacy with ringworm. While the company says that it will kill parvo etc., I'm a bit skeptical as I know they are also trying to make a sale. Does anyone have any experience with this product?

Any and all advice is very much appreciated!

Thank you!

Re: Parvo help

Ya know if it were me.... I wouldn't get a puppy...... you have had such a bad experience, I would consider talking to breeders and finding someone that had a young adult or older (couple years) that they needed to place.... that way you can be sure that the dog has been vaccinated and won't get the illness. I think that would be what I would do if you are fearful (and you ahve reason to be)
