Unhappy welsh corgi skin condition

My 7 yr old welsh corgi breaks out with a skin condition(very much like bad exema) caused by her own bacteria, according to the vet. It starts under her front legs and between her back legs. If not treated quickly it can spread all thru her hair. It will recur every 2 months or so and requires a vet visit costing about $112.00including 14 days of antibiotic(250mg clavomoxin), medicated shampoo and eye drops. Any ideas how to control this with out the expensive vet visits. Thanks

Re: welsh corgi skin condition

What's she eating? Has she had a full bloodwork panel done?

Red face Re: welsh corgi skin condition

Hi!! Candy, my welsh corgi eats Purina One. I adopted her from the pound when she was 4 yr old. It's an on going problem and seems much worse in the hot weather. Never had full blood work done. She is also chubby which may also aggravate the problem. I thought maybe it was common to the breed. Thanks, Lee

Re: welsh corgi skin condition

If she's chubby and has skin issues, I'd seriously consider having a bloodwork panel done to rule out thyroid problems.

Also, switching over to a higher-end food may help. Purina products have a lot of grains in them that some dogs have issues with. In the long run, a higher quality, more expensive food will cost you less because you'll need to feed less, and won't have to spend as much with vet visits.
