General questions for a new dog owner

This is my first puppy to care for as an adult. I have a French Bulldog and need some help on a few issues. First off let me start by saying he is an allergy dog! Skin and eyes. Plus he has had his first staph infection....... But now, his eye is swollen, almost shut. I was told, (not by a vet) that I could give him Benadryl?!?! Has anyone ever done this? Also his "manhood" has dropped and he is atraccted to EVERYTHING, one of my mom's dogs is not fixed, if he mounts her (he is only 6 months) will this effect him in the long run?

Benadryl can be given to dogs. I use it with my Great Dane. He is also an allergy dog. It does not work for sever allergies though. My Great Dane gets a cortizone shot every 6wks during allergy season, its amazing. Stops all itching.

For the mounting. I highly suggest you neuter him now. First of all, dogs can carry many STDs, and you dont want your dog to be exposed to them. There are also to many unwanted litters in the world as it is! He will continue to mount and may start marking his territory (peeing on everything). Dogs can also "wet hump" where they actually ejaculate (this can be on your couch, pillow etc). Please consider having him neutered

As far as Benadryl, my vet told me to give it to my dog after an allergic reaction to a bee sting and she was fine and it worked!

As far as mounting, this is not a sexual act but one of dominance. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Yes, our vet told us to give Benadryl when Scout had skin allergies. We then switched her food to Cailfornia Natural Lamb formula, and everything cleared up. I think she was allergic to chicken which is quite common, and was in her previous food. California Natural has a very short ingredient list, so it's often good for allergy dogs. Have you been able to identify what the allergy is?

My dog too has MASSIVE allergies, and her eye has swollen shut also. I do give her 4 Benadryl a day. Also, for immediate relief (which it sounds like you need) your vet can give him a Cortizone shot. It works fast, and lasts a while. It does increase their appetites and make them thirsty, and sometimes cranky. Nothin major

I would SERIOUSLY get your dog fixed. MANY MANY health problems can occur with a male, OR a female dog if they are un fixed.
