doxie issues

i have a mini dachshund and wanting to buy a standard. my only problem is, dont standards keep the extremely short legs but the body becomes a ton larger??? i dont want to buy a standard if back problems are going to be a much higher risk then they already are for my mini. if someone knows about standards, please answer!

Re: doxie issues

The best thing you can do is get a dog from a reputable breeder who will disclose any history of back problems in the line.
Keeping the dog fit and at a suitable weight is very valuable for maintaining back health. Also not letting the dog jump up and down from sofa's and beds, etc. This requires diligent training. They make ramps or stairs for these type dogs to get in and out of your bed or on the sofa.

Have you ever thought of doing Earthdog trials with your teenie weenie? They are lots of fun.

Re: doxie issues

I know what you mean except for most toy breeds its the knee caps you have to worry about, thats what my vet said, he said toy breeds are prone to their knee caps popping out of place because they have little legs and alot of weight on them and jumping up and down off of beds and couches puts alot of stress on them.

I have a mini, but I think a standard wouldn't be any worse then a mini considering that it is gonna be a bigger dog, so its legs will be a little bigger for the bigger body. Ask your vet about the differance.. or research it.
