Shaky Lab...do you have any idea's

I was in the kitchen and my lab as she was laying in the floor. Then I went to go sit in the floor where she will always come lay beside me. We have wood floors and she sounded like she was having troble walking on them which is nothing really new, so I didn't look over at her. Then she got to the carpet and was still stomping so I look over at her and she is shaking and tring to walk over to me and I reach out to touch her and she just lays down and is shaking all over her whole body. It was not a really violent shake but she could hardly stand. Her eyes were open and she was breathing, but her jaw was locked up tight. Her heart was racing, but in a regular rythm. This went on for about 3 min then it started to slow down and she opened her mouth and started to pant like she had been outside playing. Now she is laying next to me and everything seems normal. This is the first time this has happened. Any idea's???

I'm not trying to be rude, but is there a reason why you think a bunch of mostly non-professional dog lovers on an Internet forum would be better able to answer your question than a vet who knows your dog and can actually examine her?

Because it was the middle of the night and I could not get her to a vet...and I was just wondering if anyone else had had the same thing happen.....A few million people view the web daily and I thought that maybe someone would might have had the same thing, but I guess you are less help and more of a jerk. Thanks for being such a help.

Re: Shaky Lab...do you have any idea's

Your dog could have had a seizure. My Beagle had a few episodes before we started him on phenobarbitol. Both times I witnessed them, they happened at night. He was shaking and his body stiffened a bit and his eyes grew large and he stared into space. He was unable to stand and like yours, 5 minutes later, he was fine.

I took my dog to the vet the first time this happened. I would do the same for your dog, there may be an underlying reason for the seizure if that is what it was.

Since your dog's breathing pattern changed, a vet visit as soon as possible is warrented.

Let us know how she is doing and what the vet says.

It sound like what I went through not to long ago with my Lab who was 15 Going on 16yrs. I would suggest go to the vet again and make the right decision, because of our own feelings I feel the dog did suffer.

I'm not trying to be rude either, ( I guess that means I'm a jerk too, and if Ron is in that group, I'm happy to be there), but what do you plan on doing with a compilation of guesses? Lead the vet to a conclusion that could possibly harm the dog?

In the middle of the night where I live, we have what are called e-vets. You may want to find yours and visit them.

Sounds like either a seizure or a stroke. It could be serious. Isn't there an e-vet there? Did you take her to the regular vet today? No one is being a jerk by telling you that you should have been at the vet after the episode happened. We're just passing along some common sense that will hopefully help you the next time you're in a sticky situation like the one you were in last night.

I would also suggest seziure. When a dog has a very fast heartbeat and is breathing hard but not through the mouth its not good. My smallest dog has seziures from time to time and that sounds like a seziure to me. Can you explain the shaking? Was it shaking all over or more like jerking? When your dog started acting normal and sat up was she disoriented? Did she act confused or afraid?

This is exactly why we close these threads. Well-meaning people will guess on a diagnosis and give dog owners one more excuse to avoid going to the vet.
