Here lately I've noticed that my oldest dogs eyes have started to have a cloudy look to them. I'm pretty sure that it's cataracts developing. Anyone know how they treat cataracts in dogs? Can I get him some drops to keep them from progressing, or do they just remove the cataracts once they become so bad... like they do in humans?
Although dogs do get cataracts, not all clouding of the lenses is due to cataracts. There is a normal aging change called lenticular sclerosis which is very different from a cataract. Have your vet examine your dog to determine the difference. If it is a cataract, there are no drops to treat them. The only treatment is surgery which is performed by a veterinary ophthalmologist. If your vet determines that your dog has a cataract and you want to pursue treatment, have her/him refer you to an ophthalmologist.
