Question- repeated heats.. Anyone have this before?

I bred my girl. For the time in my life, she missed- going through severe false pregancy to the point she was even lactating.. Had to be placed on antibiotics to prevent mastitius etc. She is fine now.. Then she turned around ( barely 3 months after last heat) and came RIGHT BACK into heat again! I took her back to the specialist, she is fine- no cysts etc- but the vet said this is a odd occurance. It can happen but odd.. The vet said that it is a " primal" response- ie having been bred, pregnant briefly, then something happened, and now- just like any other "wildlife" type- came back in to rebreed.
The question I have is this- sighthounds typically come into season every 18-24 months- so another heat this quick is really weird! Additionally- although I have never had a female miss, nevermind a false pregnancy on top of it- Has anyone else had a female do this??

I have heard of it but have no experience with it...... I would consider calling a reproductive vet and see what they have to say..... I know that this is what cats do.... but have never heard of dogs doing it.

Thats who we saw was a reproductive vet. Both vets said while its odd, considering the breed tends to be "primal" ( like the chase reflex) it was odd. Thats why I had a full ultrascan, tests etc to make sure nothing was "wrong " with her.
Its not the money we spent to breed her- I know that with all the best of care- breeding is a " cr*p shoot"- I just didnt expect it. She even gained a total of 9 pounds(!!!!) in the false pregancy. ( Its hard to put weight on a sighthound- like pulling teeth...)
She is not being bred obviously this time because I want her body back to normal. They also said that without the rebreed, it wont place the hormone in her body to do this again.. While it was a serious blow that she wasnt, I just have never had any experience with this. They also said maybe her eggs were not mature the first time ( they cant test that one) and even her brother is acting different than he did the last time. I hate to say this- but I think this heat is the real thing..
I also blame myself because before I was under alot of pressure, out of sorts and blame myself that she missed because of things I was dealing with at the time.. I know when showing it " goes down the leash" and feel like I caused her to miss. She will be a great mom- that I can see..
Thank you so much for your reply. I know there are several excellent responsible breeders on this forum and looking forward to their input on this situation. It took me a week to post this concern- ...

things happen and sometimes we miss and sometimes in hindsight we can figure out why.... I am glad you opted to do the ultrasound to make sure that nothing was going on..... that is probably what I would have done and run some blood work just to rule out anything but it sounds liek she is just a bit out of sorts from what you and the vet are saying... I didn't realize that they only came into season ever 18-24 .... that must be great if you are not breeding but tough if you are trying to... you don't get that many shots at it.

Let me know if you find out anything mroe and I will ask a few friends and see what they say.....

Re: Question- repeated heats.. Anyone have this before?

I've had a bitch come into season 4 months after having a litter. But that was just maintaining her normal heat cycle of every six months.

Since Galina had her first false heat last September (or was it October) and the real one in April, it sounds like her heat cycles are going to be much closer than the anticipated 18 to 24 months you originally thought would happen.

Hopefully she'll have it all sorted out after this one!

I hope you are right applesmom.. I was thinking the same thing... Now she just needs to get back to normal .. Any ideas of a supplement or something I could give her? Brothers reaction is that this is the real thing- as well as Hottie.. hmmm

I wouldn't suggest doing anything different than you have been. She's a normal healthy dog and her own system should be able to handle the situation just fine without any supplementation.
