Cool --gerbils--

I was given a free female gerbil and cage around easter, then less the a week or so she had three babies, they are all "FEMALES", now they are starting to get there fur now. One is a mama's girl aka same fur, the other two are the same color looking like the father. Which I sadly dont own! He's now being used as a breeder gerbil now. I hope the twins will have different markings to tell them apart. I think I maybe keeping them all since they are indeed female babies. My favorite is the one that looks like the mom, shes more well behaved. One of the twins is just eviler lol. Eepp. They are wonderful.

- I know tons about gerbils too -

One thing for sure is I need to get PHOTO'S !!!!!!!!
Does anyone else like them or own any?

They are clean/cute/extemly low biters
They are more of a run away then stay and bite. They could if they wanted.

Re: --gerbils--

I learned about Gerbils in lab animal class last quarter in school. I learned how to restrain them.

Your supposed to pick them up by the by the base of their tail (if your picking them up by the tail) because if you grab the end of the tail, the whole tail "skin" might come off. Otherwise just pick them up by their body.

I dont really want one because they are too fragile for me, I can handle bird fragile but not Gerbil tail fragile. Their cool little animals though!

Re: --gerbils--

I don't currently have a gerbil, but I have before and I absolutely love them. They have such personality! I'd love to have one, but my Jeffy wouldn't have it. He's already let me know that I'm pushing it with the ferret and puppy! And since gerbils are notorious escape artists, I dare not give Jeff the chance. SIGH Oh well, you can't blame him. He is a cat, even though he doesn't know it. Please post pics! I'd love to see your babies!

Sadly yes. I am against animal testing but that doesnt mean I can just skip that class I needed to do it. We just learned how to restrain mice, gerbils, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters. We also have ferrets at the school but that quarter had too many holidays so we never learned about them. We also witnessed the gassing of mice, which was optional for students to watch or not(dont worry they were from a research facility and were going to be euthanized anyway) and then after they were euthanized we dissected them and practiced giving injections and drawing blood. Good thing that was the only time we have to do that because I almost fainted during that class.

And that is why I am a tech and not a vet, I can watch people cutting into an animal, but I cant do it myself.

I pick them up by there bodies more safer and better for him and better handling.
Holding them makes them tame little animals. They are darling little animals.

Ugh I'ed either be crying as I disected it or extremely grossed out. Frogs and squids I can do but mammals are a different story. I feel bad about doing it. I had 7 rabbits so if I had to disect one to get a good grade in a class it just wouldn't happen. lol
