Re: Vets charging too much????

Yes, they do overcharge. One time I took Snoopy in the time I saw red stuff on his mat, turned out the food I'm feeding him has red dye and when he chewed on the mat it got on it. Anyway while I was there he was talking about how I needed to start cleaning Snoopy's ears out with a ear cleaning solution. So I told him I'd stop by the pet store and pick some up. But he said he'd do it this time, so I agreed and let him do it. When I went up to the front to pay the bill I was only expecting a $24 bill for the visit and thats it. But it was a $35 bill because he charged $15 to clean his ears, his ears! And I didn't even say he had to, he offered to. Another time was when he charged for a exam to just give Snoopy a shot and get a fecal sample, since I forgot to bring one.

Durb, your vet is extremely cheap IMO. I have yet to go into the vets and come out for less than $100. Office visits are $52.00, each vaccine is charged individually on top of that, there's a "waste disposal" fee for disposing of the needle, any meds that may be required, etc. etc. etc. Whenever you bring him in for shots or whatever there is going to be an exam fee, aka office visit.

Re: Vets charging too much????

Let's see, I pay 200.00 to walk in the door with my four dogs. And I just paid 298.00 for tests that i couldn't get results back for because I was told by the vet tech that it was very hard to get results on these tests. Plus I found out that I already paid for and administered the meds for the things my dog was tested for. That was 125.00. I was given and paid for two sets of ear cleaners and then they cleaned them again on a visit and charged me for it. I don't mind paying for services but I think it's sometimes a little unreasonable.

Hmm...have you tried going to the doctor for yourself lately? If you don't have insurance (which I'm assuming your pets don't, so that would be a fair comparison), a visit to the doctor is going to cost you anywhere from $50-$100 office fee. Then on top of that they will charge you for every test they run and for any specimen collections. If you go into the ER, expect to pay a minimum of $200 for a visit plus labs and ancillary work.

Vets are so cheap compared to what we pay to have ourselves taken care of. Not to mention, have you ever looked at the price to run a veterinary practice? I would never become a vet just because of how little money they actually make!

As pet owners, we have come to expect the same kind of high-tech diagnostic equipment, sophisiticated surgical procedures and heroic measures for our animals that we do for ourselves. We asked for it. We got it.

And now we're paying for it. Who did we THINK was going to pay for it?

Re: Vets charging too much????

I thought that the vet was expensive here in Ireland, but reading your posts I realise that they're not so bad. I haven't had to bring the dogs for his vaccines yet, as he had them done before I got him, but I did have the two kittens done lately and the two sets of shots for both of them came to 82 Euro each, as they give a 10% discount if you have more than one. This included their check ups both times. We don't need to vaccinate for rabies here, as ireland is free, so they do get fewer shots than in the USA.

The dog got a badly infected mole, which only flared up two weeks after he was neutered (when they'd figured it was fine and didn't need removing) and when I took him to the vet with it she felt so bad that he would probably need surgery again that she didn't charge me for anything but the antiseptic cream - 7.50 Euro for a ver visit lasting 15 minutes! (The mole miracelously vanished after about a month, by the way - they wouldn't operate again before that because of the dangers of repeated anasthetics.)

Then Jasper broke a tooth and they charged me 120 Euro to have it extracted, which was quite reasonable I though.

It's 90 Euro to spay a cat, as we had the mother done in July and we'll be getting another 10% discount if we bring in the two kittens together.

The only gripe I have with my vets is that you're never sure of seeing the same vet twice, as they rotate all of the time (there are three of them in the one pratice). But this was the same in the vet I brough my last cat to as well.

Ha!

I only posed that question because people sometimes have funny ideas about the cost of doing business.

When I had my framing business, I had a $6000 mounting press that I mostly used to mount $5 posters. I did some mounting for my sister (for free - my mistake) and she asked, out of curiosity, what I would normally charge.

When I told her, she gasped out loud and said, "It only took you five minutes!" I said, "It took five minutes because I have a $6000 mounting press."

She said, "Well you don't expect your CUSTOMERS to pay for that, do you?"

I said, "Well, not the first one, but - yes - I expect my customers to pay my business expenses and at least a little extra."

Sorry. I can never pass up an opportunity to make fun of my sister.

Re: Vets charging too much????

Believe me I am very awair of the cost of doing businnes as I run 3 right now and each has high over head in equipment. However poeple know the cost of getting these sevices and some will balk but most think my prices are more then reasonable. I raised the price on one of sizes of my prints this year and not one person said anything.
