Chinchilla Adoption

Hello, All!
I have been considering adopting a female chinchilla. I have to admit, though, I do not know much about them - - their personality characteristics, "trainability", able to get along with dogs/cats, etc. if anyone can share any insight, I would appreciate it... thanks!

i've had chinchillas many times. i never trained mine. They need dust baths, chinchilla food(looks like bunny pellets but is better for them than bunny pellets). I never let them out with my dogs or cats, they really cannot defend themselves. I had a chinchilla only room no other pets where allowed. Each chinchilla has its own personality. There are different colors besides gray.

Re: Chinchilla Adoption

This is kind of old, but in case you are still interested or actually did get a chin I would recommend that you go to www.chin-n-hedgies.com. They will give you all of the advice that you need.

My husband and I had a beige male and a white mosaic. You have to have a cage that is basically like a flight cage for a bird, but with LOTS of pine landings and levels for them to jump from. They originally lived in the mountains so they jump, jump, jump.

Ours never liked to be handled, and I haven't met one yet that did. They'll do anything for a craisin though!

Good luck! Let us know if you decided to get a chin.

Get 2 so if it doesn't work out, you can have a nice pair of gloves.

(Ok..Bad, I know, but I couldn't resist!)

Re: Chinchilla Adoption

we had one in my high school. it would always get out, and would always be found in the cafeteria...I think the cooks were trying to get to it personally.
