Outside Cats

Hi everyone. Since fall is here and winter is around the corner (yuck!!!) I have been thinking about my outside cat. He is about 7 years old and in very good health, but it does get cold here and I am thinking about putting a bed outside for him. I was even thinking about a heated bed for those really cold days and nights. Does anyone have any suggestions for what would work, without attracting mice (not that they would stand a chance against him though) and would be safe for him? I was thinking about a small to medium size dog crate with the door removed and a blanket of some sort in there and maybe a heating pad for pets under it? His full sister lives inside, but he has never liked being confined to the house. Do you think I am going overboard on him?

Re: Outside Cats

Our outdoor cat sleeps in a plastic dog kennel with an old dog bed in it. She LOVES it and can be found in it every night during the winter.

Of course we live in Texas, so it doesn't get terribly cold here. I leave the crate on our front porch, and it's sheltered from the wind and weather.

Definitely check out the K&H warming mats. They are super popular, with really positive user reviews. They have one that's especially for outdoor cats. Here's a link to it on amazon. Here's a picture of the set-up that one person has, that uses a upside-down tupperware container as a shelter, with the pad under it.

It saves energy by just working when there's a weight on it. K&H brand is a little more expensive, but it's worth it because the cheaper ones break really easily.

Here's a link to a K&H bed that's cheaper, but it's meant for indoor use. So if you're planning on putting it somewhere really sheltered from moisture, like in a barn or garage, this one would be suitable.

Re: Outside Cats

Hey Great Big Puppy (I would love to meet you btw, I love that name!)-- I had this question a few weeks ago because I have 3 kitties, and 2 go outside regularly. Here's an article I found on the Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul site on helping prep your cats for winter:
http://www.chickensoupforthepetlover...d_behavior/23/

I like the idea of the heated water bowl- especially knowing how much my kitties love to drink water! Hope this helps!

Re: Outside Cats

Hi,

Thanks for the replies! I only had a few minutes to look at the websites, but the K&H beds look nice. I've got the heated water bowl, it's great!
Thanks again!
