Poor Ruthie Chicken:(

Our poor Ruthie Chicken (a cat) had to have dental surgery yesterday. She has horrible, horrible teeth and now has very few left. She lost 4 more yesterday at the vet. Since we first got her she has had issues with her teeth, losing several every year no matter what we do. The vet took x-rays to see if she had any tumors or anything that might be pushing the teeth out . . no tumors. She had an infection around the teeth, even though we put this blue gel stuff in her mouth every night that is supposed to help keep her mouth clean. She sent off a sample to cornell to test for something (can't remember the name right now) and she is on antibiotics and pain killers. She will be eating only wet food now I guess since she has so few teeth.

We have her locked in the bedroom by herself for a few days while she recoups from the procedure.

Yeah, my mom's cat needed a dental last year. She lost 5 teeth. Poor thing had a bad life before we found her.

Do you think the vet's testing for stomatitis? If that's what it is, you might as well pull all of her teeth now because that's the only thing that fixes it.

Re: Poor Ruthie Chicken:(

I can't remember what it was she tested for. I will look tomorrow. She only has like 3 or 4 teeth left as it is We adopted The Ruthie Chicken from a rescue, before that I think she was a stray, but I'm not sure. When we adopted her we took her in for her new pet check up and our vet said she looked like she had some bad teeth. So, we did a dental and several teeth were pulled. Then she had another dental almost a year later and some more teeth were pulled. Then at her well check up she spit out a tooth, and surprise surprise she needed a dental and more were pulled.

We put this blue gel stuff in her mouth every day that is supposed to kill bacteria and help with plaque and tarter, but I guess her teeth are (err, were) to bad.

Re: Poor Ruthie Chicken:(

It is bartonella (cat scratch fever bacteria) that she is being tested for. She is feeling better, still not eating a lot, but her mouth probably hurts. She seems happier though.
