| Re: My dream pet (serval cat) Pretty! I like Caracals---but the extreme requirements for keeping wild cats don't appeal to me. For instance, they don't use litterboxes........
There are a few domestic/Serval hybrid "breeds" out there that look a lot like Servals but are more manageable. Savannahs, and I know there's another hybrid but I forget what they're calling them. |

| Re: My dream pet (serval cat) Not to mention the whole, unpredictable feature...
Pretty, but I like wild cats to stay wild and not be bred with normal cats to make a mix that is equally wild and unpredictable. |

| Re: My dream pet (serval cat) Have you ever seen the teeth on one of those cats???? It's enough to scare me off....lol. They are not all cute and pretty when they are sunk in your arm. I, too, feel that they should stay wild.
We supply a local zoo with food and once they had baby bobcat kittens that the mother was killed. We got to play with them a few times. It was all fun and games until they got a little bigger, they do not play like a house cats. The zoo keepers explained to us that they are fairly manageable until they hit a certain age, then all bets are off....lol. |

| Re: My dream pet (serval cat) They are really cool looking, but believe me if you met some of the cats I've met at work...you wouldn't one.
We recently had a 14 week old White Savannah Cat (African Serval/Domestic Cat) and while he was very cute...he was trying to bite us left and right for even touching him...I cannot imagine what he'll be like when he's bigger...they get BIG.
I've also met a Cheeto (Ocicat/Bengal) who was huge, all muscle and the owners couldn't touch him. They were a mom and daughter and all they said was "well he's so beautiful, but yeah we can't even pet him, isn't he cool?"
I think they're gorgeous cats, but so are tigers...and I wouldn't want one of them either...
Seriously though cats can be terrifying...I've never thought that about dogs! |

| You should see them up close when they hiss and show their teeth, it is very scary!!! You get the point very easily that the cat doesn't want to be messed with, and I am not about to argue with them.....lol. |

| Re: My dream pet (serval cat) My neighbor has one, sweet cat but A LOT of work. costed him a small fortune but the cat itself was the TINIEST of the expenses.. He had to buy the cat from some guy on the beach using it to attract people to his night club..poor cat was miserable.
The cat lives in the house, and is sometimes quite destructive, but he also has a large beautiful enclosure outside (includes logs, playthings, tree, stage, pool, etc..).. which he tells me is something very necesary.
The cat has to see a special exotic vet.. $$
He takes her on walks every day, so i run into him with her. he sais the walks help keep her stimulated.. she wears a harness. he even carries a picture of his destroyed living room lol the price of one of these cats is usually enough to discourage people
We were talking, and he said MANY of them are sold declawed, but he decided to not do that. and im sure the cat appreciates it, he can climb, scratch his tree, etc..
In my opinion..if you can't handle an exotic cat with its claws.. then you shouldn't have one. I hate declawing :/
On the plus side.. the cat is beautiful and very kind with most people as long as they introduce themselves nicely. |

| Nice anecdote. I'm glad, too, that he decided not to declaw. He sounds like one of the more responsible people, one that I would trust more to have an exotic like a serval.
And I agree, but I'll take your statement a bit further - if you can't handle any cat with it's claws, you shouldn't have a cat. Period. Declawing is the easy way out, exotic cat or regular housecat. Shouldn't have to deform an animal to be able to own it. |

No climbing or scratching? Don't declaw period.

| Re: My dream pet (serval cat) I agree with all that's been said about keeping wild kitties wild. Although, I must say the Bengal cat is GORGEOUS!
Haha.
This is the bad part about taking cats out of the wild... |
