I just recentally got a new cage for Joey. The lady that has the Guinea pig rescue (whom I adopted Dot and Louie from) had it sitting out in her garage and gave it to me for free - and this is a $400 dollar cage. It is at least four times the size of the one we did have for him and he loves it - he can fly around and climb to his hearts content. |

I am going to see if I can sell it on CL or something so I can fund future bird projects....I'm thinking of possible doing some rescue work w/birds...I see soooo many being given away on CL and what not.... Quote:

| Re: New Bird cage.... Awesome! I just talked my dad into FINALLY buying a better (and bigger) cage for our two budgies, which are currently in a wimpy, breaking-down cage about the size of the old one your two were in. I can't wait for it to arrive (bought it online).
Bet your keets are happy as little clams! =) |

| Re: New Bird cage.... That is why I love the cage Joey has so much...the bar spacing is small enough to suit a Budgies or even finches, but it is big enough to hold numerous birds. LOVE it.
Here's a picture of Joey's cage: |

| The bar spacing is 1/2". I LOVE the cage.
I got it from a lady who does rescue, who got it from the local shelter when they dropped off six Cockatiels at her house for her to place. Once the 'Tiels were adopted she wasn't using the cage, so she gave it to me when I adopted Louie.
I don't know the exact type of cage it is, but here is a cage that is very similar, if not the same cage, just a different "version": http://www.bird-cage-supply.com/larg...bird-cage.aspx Quote:

| LOL That is too cute! Joey loves the cage as he can fly in it if he so desires. His old cage wasn't bad at all, but he only had room to flap his wings, not fly. What is really cute is when he "forages" at the base of the cage and waddles around. The cat has a hayday when he does that, but Joey doesn't mind.
And picture for you Katzyn: |

| Re: New Bird cage.... Oh, man, his eyes are so gorgeous...I had a whiteface pied pearl female, and her eyes were that sweet brown colour...My cinnamon lutino male has ice-blue eyes. =3 I love tiel eyes. <3 And lucky you, getting a cage for free like that. I would have loved that cage, back when I was thinking of breeding my mated pair (which I am no longer going to do). |

I would have loved that cage, back when I was thinking of breeding my mated pair (which I am no longer going to do). | Sadly his other eye has something wrong with it...the skin surrounding it is growing over it so he only has a little speck to see out of. I imagine it will be completely covered one of these days. When I was in at the exotic vet with my Guinea Pig I asked about it and the lady said that it is a fairly common malady in 'Tiels and that they could remove it surgically. I'm just not sure what the risks/benefits are, as he isn't in any pain and besides not liking to be approached on that side has adapted well.
I'm trying to decide if in the future I want to get another 'Tiel to keep him company or not. I'm not a "bird person" (much prefer my ferrets), so I'm torn. |

| Re: New Bird cage.... Blackrose, just be warned, if you do get him another tiel playmate, if they get along, he might turn to the other tiel, rather than you. This is what happened with my male. I bought the female first, then, six months later, bought a male for her. At first, I kept them separate, so I could train the male, and then, we got along great, but when I put the two together, the male can think of nothing but "his" female. Even now, they are in separate cages, but he'll have nothing to do with me; all he thinks about it her. =P He doesn't bite (I taught him that if he bites, his world shakes), but he doesn't want anything to do with me, which sucks. =/
This is just my personal experience. If you and Joey have a good relationship, and you can spare a couple of hours a day to letting him hang out near or on you, then he probably is fine being the only bird. |
