Joel, my SO, recently began hinting at wanting a snake. I'm not adverse to the idea as I have always wanted one but I don't know anything about snake keeping....What should I be taking into consideration before going out and getting a snake?
and your snakes are lovely btw... |

I like the breeding pair of snakes you have...we had some corn snakes, so we are familiar with snake keeping...I miss 'em but we don't have room for an aquarium here; one big enough for them that is.
I want a beardie though, when we do have room for more reptiles... |

| Re: so this is what I do.... Oh, beautiful Woma python!! I also keep reptiles. My main focus is a breeding colony of green tree pythons, but I also have 2 "misfits" (a leucistic black ratsnake and a West Papuan carpet).
Here's a link to my iHerp page with pics of all my scaly buddies. If it doesn't work for non-members, I can upload pics... http://www.iherp.com/Public/Animals/...1-80dfcd30b3db |

Well, the first thing is think about what YOU want in a snake....mostly size wise... you want a little one (4ft is considered small) or som'thing bigger....
Do you want a "biteless" snake , or one with spunk? Som' of the easy to keep snakes have a little spirit, and will nail you occasionally if not handled often.
Good first snakes eat readily, tend to not bite, and don't get enormous (10+ft)
personally, even tho ball pythons are regularly sold as "good first snakes" i don't feel they are. They turn a year old and then start to go off feed, which is stressful to the owner.. also alot of them are still imported from africa, and are less than happy about the journey.
Cornsnakes are good starters, and they are the one most people end up with. If you want spunk you can try one of the many kingsnakes.
Rosy boas are often recommended, but honestly, they bite if not handled enough....alot. lol
If you want a big snake get a boa constrictor....
hands down my fav. Great snakes, big, not huge, eats readily, handles easy...
just stay away from the big pythons (burms, retics, rock, etc)
thats just the common stuff.... does he have any idea what hes looking for? |

Thanks for sharing! | The possibilities for lizard ownership is almost endless depending on the laws where you live. Quote:

and your snakes are lovely btw... | I would recommend a corn snake. They are easy to keep, not too big which means smaller habitat, less snake to deal with and smaller food, many phases to chose from, not very expensive to obtain/keep, legal in most any place, and are pretty docile when handled (not that they won't ever bite of course, but at least its a small bite if they do).
The main thing I'd say to consider is the enclosure and feeding. You've got to deal with feeding your pet other animals for its entire life. Some people think they will be ok with it but really don't like it and chose to get rid of their snake because they don't want to deal with feeding the snake. |
