Run-away horse!!!!

My horse Spanky is 6 years old and he not like other horses. Every time I try to walk him from the ring to the barn he pulls and tries to get away. His mother died when he was just born, so I do not know if that messed him up a little bit. He also think he is a stallion. Every time I walk him near a mare he tries to mount her. I have had him for 3 years and this always happens if you can give me some advice that would great!!! Thank you.

Now, I don't know a lot about horses.....but I know enough to be able to say that training them isn't easy. Do you know a professional trainer you could ask?

Re: Run-away horse!!!!

Honestly - I think those are problems that need to be worked through with a professional or experienced horse person. The reason I say so is not because I believe a horse can't be trained by it's owner - but rather I believe that the owner needs to be someone who knows EXACTLY what they are doing. A spooked horse is a lot more dangerous then a spooked dog may be. If he were to spook and charge forward he could easily run you over. Similarly, if he escapes your grasp and takes off it would not take much for him to become injured.

There must be other horse people in your area. Or if you have a tack shop nearby trainers will sometimes advertise there. I'd say to start looking around for a Pro. I don't think this is a problem you are equip to handle on your own.

For the pulling, I'd consult a pro. As far as thinking he's a stud, he could've been "proud cut". Ask your vet to look and see if he was fully gelded. Sometimes they're lazy and don't finish the job, causing some geldings to think they still have something.

I agree with the others. You need a professional trainer. He is going to get you or someone else hurt. Sometimes one of the consequences of being an orphan is that they don't have any respect for humans. Please seek out a trainer before he runs you over or you get kicked by an unreceptive mare.

Re: Run-away horse!!!!

IF he's trying to mount he be a bit 'riggy', this can be corrected with supplemants or a hormone treatment.

The rest is all TRAINING, get a good trainer to help you correct his lead issues. Just as with dogs, horses need to see the human as the leader of herd, your horse has no respect for you as leader and you need to learn HOW to correct this before a serious accident happens.
