Need help with new cat

Okay, so I got a new kitten today (she's about 3-4 months old, I'm guessing.) She was very nice when I met her and very affectionate, but now that she's home, she doesn't want to be near me. She seems very scared, which I believe is normal for a cat when it's entering a new home.
She doesn't like any of the animals in my house. Which, of course, is also normal at first. There are 4 other cats and 2 dogs in my house as of right now, oh and plus 1 rabbit. How long will it take for my new cat, Iris, to settle in?
I'm not sure how to make her comfortable.. every time I go near her she growls...
I put her in the litterbox 5 minutes ago and she hasn't left yet (she's just sitting in there.)
I also put food and water near her and she just sniffed it (must not be hungry). What else can I do to help her feel comfortable?
Right now I'm just leaving her alone and keeping all other animals out of the room.

Re: Need help with new cat

When I first caught Pippin & Fergus (they were feral stray kittens, about 7-8 weeks old), I kept them in a large rabbit cage in my kitchen, and just spent time near them to get them used to my presense. When they got too big for the cage (after only a few days), I moved them into the bathroom, and again, spent time in there just sitting on the floor reading a magazine or something, to get them used to me. After a few days, they stopped hissing at me, and would come up to me for attention.

Now, I can't get the little buggers to leave me alone. It's rare I can sit down without one or both of them jumping on me. Pippin is walking on my keyboard drawer right now, purring and rubbing his face against mine.

Just give her time and a safe place by herself, and she'll come around. Put up a baby gate when you're able to supervise her and let the others see and smell her, and her them.

Re: Need help with new cat

Thanks. That's a good idea. I remember when we got our cat Sora and he was only about 6 weeks old (we didn't know any better, our friends said it was okay to take him). We kept him in a cat carrier for the first few days so our other cat could come up and sniff him when she wanted to. It only took about a week until they were curled up together on the couch.

I've been going over to Iris every couple of minutes to talk to her. I just lay on the floor and look at her and talk softly, until she growls, then I back away.
The other animals in my house are stacking on top of each other near my door trying to get in. It's funny because they don't all usually get along, but now they're so curious that they don't care who's touching them.
Well, they do get along, but only with certain other animals. It's kinda like this in my house: Sora (cat) loves all the cats. Kairi (cat) loves Sora and Oliver (dog). H-Storm (cat) loves all the cats and Tiffera (dog, obviously). Yuffie (cat) loves H-storm (cat, her brother) and Sora. Tiffera loves all the animals, whether they love her or not. Oliver could care less.
Phew. Well that's kinda confusing... but you get what I mean... Lol.

Re: Need help with new cat

depends on the cat

might take a week, might take months.

Once shes playing "paws" under the door with the other cats you can start opening the door.

Don't rush!!

Re: Need help with new cat

Okay. I'm definitely not going to rush this cat. She's very frightened by all the new smells and sounds and everything around her... I'll be taking this verrrrryyy slowly.

"Paws"... That reminds me, she's a hemmingway (extra toes).
The reason why I got her was because my neighbor across the street had an outdoor cat that got pregnant and had 3 kittens (apparently there's a black hemmingway cat roaming the neighborhood). And then my neighbor's cat just got pregnant again (*sigh*) so she's been rejecting her kittens. The good thing is that my neighbor told me that after her cat has her kittens, she's going to take her to get spayed and she already has everything worked out for that. So I got one of her 3 month old kittens that she needed to find a home for. I think my kitten, Iris, has about 1 extra toe per foot. I'll put pictures up later when Iris is more settled in...
