Quick Cat Question

Hey all, I know..I know, it's a DOG forum. I'm with ya,babies. But I need some help.

My daughter's pound kitten is getting neutered today. Basically the rescue covers everything but the vet just said to my daughter on the phone that it will be 20 bucks for the pain meds. Uhh..pain meds? Every cat I ever remember owning just sucked it up and recovered without meds. I can't really afford it today (tomorrow..yes, but not today!). Ya think he really needs them?

It depends how you feel about the cat. I wouldn't want surgery w/o pain meds and I know I'd get them for my dog if given the choice. If this was for your dog would you do it??

Others may disagree, but I don't think he needs it. My vet does give an injection of long-lasting pain reliever with all surgeries, but rarely, very rarely, dispenses pain meds. Only if requested.

For a cat neuter in particular? It's such a minor surgery. Any discomfort they might feel would probably just keep them from being too active while recovering. And really, they'd need to recover more from the anesthesia than the actual procedure.

And I know it's just 20 bucks but I wasn't expecting to spend it and I'm still sore over the 20 I lost yesterday. My daughter and I went to Hurricane Harbor and a twenty literally POOFED from my hand. It was there..then it wasn't!

For that same price I can buy him a bag of Innova that lasts over a month. It seems a bit costly for a day or two of discomfort.

Thank you! My thoughts exactly. I'm probably going to tell them we'll pass. This is our last trip to this vet anyway. They're the folks who work with the shelter. After this I'm switching him over to my dog vet.

For a nueter I probably wouldn't bother with pain meds. For a spay though I would as its a much more invasive surgery.

Agreed. That's partially why I was a bit wishy washy regarding the question of would I do it for my dog. When he gets neutered it will be a bit more invasive as he only has the one testicle..so it's kind of a big deal, almost like a spay.

We're going to pick the cat up now. I'm sure they'll look at me like I'm horrible when I refuse the meds, but meh, whatever.

I agree. It's so much of "sucking it up" but the fact that vets are realizing that animals really do feel pain. Besides, he'll just be a smart cat and sleep till he feels better, not like us humans who have to keep going (like the energizer bunny!).

Well, he's home and you'd never suspect he had a surgery at all! He's bright eyed and bushy tailed..and starving! But they said not to feed him until after 8,he looks great though.

He probably doesn't need pain pills (it is optional). Mine never had them and did quite well. This is a new option vets are giving the public b/c that's what the public wants. They get terribly upset if it is not offered. I'm sure he will be fine, keep him confined tonight so he doesn't hurt himself and he'll be rarin' to go tomorrow morning. And thank you for neutering your daughters cat!
