Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

Mortimer is a 4 yr old long haired tuxedo and right now he is shedding everywhere. I had him to a groomer about 2 months ago because he was shedding in clumps and it helped for a little bit. Now he is just dumping hair all over...bit clumps, little clumps, wisps...you get the picture.

He has been on Purina since I got him (as a kitten) and has always shed (more in the spring than other times) but it has gotten out of hand. I have been brushing him more than ever and can't even do it in the house anymore...he likes to be brushed when he's eating...I know...strange cat!

What is a good medium priced food to feed him. I bought some Nutro Max Indoor Adult (at the suggestion of PetsMart) even tho he is an indoor/outdoor cat (stays in the back yard 99% of the time believe it or not).

All suggestions are welcome. I've started vacuuming every day

Nutro is a good step, how about Felidae? I switched from Nutro to Felidae for my kitties and they do way better on it. You could also get a furminator, they do use them on cats.

Thanks for the food suggestion. Is Felidae available at PetsMart? I don't think I've heard of that one.

And I have a furminator but I had to buy a new one...I got the one suggested for cats but I need a bigger one! One swipe and it was full and not much hair in it. Should have gone with my instinct to buy the medium size in the first place!

Re: Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

No, I have not found Felidae at any Petsmart/Petco. You have to find some kind of pet food store that sells cat food. But here are some other suggestions that are at Petco/Petsmart, Natural Balance and Blue Buffalo. Natural Balance is about the same price as Nutro but Blue Buffalo is more expensive. You can look at their websites and compare it to the foods on dogfoodanalysis.com

Lily is a Siamese (lilac point). She will be 3 years old in August.

Do you have any pictures of Mortimer?

Right now just the picture in my avatar. I'm going to add some others today so Daja can be in them too! And Mort thinks he's a dog and a neighbor's 70# Lab thinks he's a dog too! He adores Roxxy (the black/tan) and rubs all over her.

Re: Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

Mort's shedding has slowed down (not because of the food). What is a good brush to use on him. He has a thick under coat and I am wondering if a undercoat rake on him. I have a Furminator which works like is says it will...gets tons of hair at a time, but it's too small. Any other suggestions? The larger furmiinator set me back $50 and I can still take it back if I can something that will work as well. I plan to do some serious brushing on him tomorrow. Thank goodness he loves to be brushed!

Re: Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

Be careful how much 'tons' of brushing you do...you CAN create bald spots due to overgrooming.

I would stick with the furminator; they work well. You can also run a Zoomgroom through his coat once you are done furminating him and that will redistribute his natural oils.

It's better to brush a little bit everyday, rather than tons of brushing one time, and not continuing, as well. It then becomes a habit for the cat too.

Re: Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

When I said "tons" I just meant it was actually getting the dead hair...and because he's the first cat I've had to brush so much...I do need to get in the habit. Right now I'm using the excuse it is to hot outside..bad mom

Re: Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

By your description this sounds beyond normal. It could be any number of things--allergies, fleas, thyroid, stress, hormone problem etc.--there's no way of telling without having the cat examined by your vet. If hair is coming out in clumps that could be very serious. I suggest you have him examined ASAP. JMHO

Re: Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

He has been...it was totally my fault...I wasn't brushing him. Took him to be groomed and it helped, but I have been very bad. He is doing much better since I started brushing him regularly...not daily yet but I'm getting there!

Re: Cat shedding EVERYWHERE!

Oh good I'm glad it is not a medical problem. YAY!

Perhaps you should try the Furminator. I found it to be a great grooming tool. Good luck!

Take a look at his picture in my signature...does he look like he has missed a meal! Anyway, I have a furminator and a rake...I just need to use them more consistently. Thanks for the tips.
