horse concerns

up until a month ago i had one mare,now i have a month old filly a stallion and a gelding..my sister in law passed away from cancer so now i have her horses..
i'm going to get the stallion gelded but i live in iowa and had to cancell twice due to rain..my concern is i've never dealt with a stallion before and he has been very sweet so far but i'm kinda scared of him he's three and huge i have him going to training in two months but until them any advice on how to deal with him would be great,i do keep him seperated from the mare and the filly i rotate them from indoor arena and pasture,he gets so pissed when its his turn to stay in the arena he throws a fit for about half an hour..
how can i keep him calm on those days..thanks ann

You just gotta let him have his tantrums; if you try to interfere you may get hurt; not just because he's a stallion either.

When he does calm down, then go spend some good quality time with him. Be careful not to let him rub on you, or otherwise 'dominate you' in anyway...becuase he is still a stallion this is super important, because you don't want him to think he can strike you, chase you, or even mount you...

Once he is gelded, you will probably not notice too much difference in his attitude and behavior, because it doesn't sound like he has really matured yet. You'll still want to keep him seperated for a good while after he is gelded as well; not only just to heal, but because it takes awhile for everything to make the 'change', and dissapate out of his system.

thank you,he will be gelded next monday and then i'll start work with him more, and your right dispite his size he is young and has alot to learn about manners and who's in charge .the trainer i use is wonderful he is so good at what he does i could watch him work with horses all day he takes his time and realy gets to know the horse and its all natrual training ,i realy feel this horse is going to be a very good horse one day his personality is great..

is he ok with the gelding? i assume the gelding is older, a lot of times just having a horse out with an older wiser horse that teaches them how to behave (without fighting) makes them wise up really fast. I had an old sweet mare that was very gentle but wouldn't take any guff from anyone that I used to put my "projects" out with for a good 6 months before I started working with them.

be careful for awhile after gelding him too. sometimes that last rush of hormones can make for a cantankerous animal for awhile. Use caution until he calms down. I agree with letting him holler and have his fit in the barn, stay away from him so you don't get bit or kicked while he is having it. It is not uncommon for an individual horse to behave that way when kept alone, they are most comfortable in herds. good luck with him, sorry to hear about your sister in law. How sad.
