New addition!

Since we have been wanting a new addition for some time we felt that after Bagheera's passing it was time to add one more to our fur-family.

This is Dwight the rat

As I have read everywhere that rats need companionship we will hopefully be getting a second rat when Dwight gets over his upper respiratory

Re: New addition!

Thats great He's cute! I could never own a rat, too big (for a rodent) for me. But I LOVE mice, when I move back home I want to get a mouse or 2 (doubt my parents will let me though) I hope he recovers from him infection soon

Re: New addition!

Aww, he's cute! The biology teacher always had rats. The two she had both died of cancer, she put them down as the vet suggested because they were already 2 years old and had tumors. Then she got two more but she went to a new school so I don't know how they are. But the ones she had were mean, according to her, she wouldn't let any of the students touch them for fear that they'd bite.

Re: New addition!

Rats are awesome pets! I can't imagine what happened to Durb's teacher's rats to make them mean, they're usually so good natured. I had a rat a long time ago, her name was Critter and she was a tan-and-white hooded. I have a mouse now, the longest lived of 6 I bought about 18 months ago. I have to say that a mouse cannot compare to a rat at all, pet-wise. Mice are stinky. They're also too wiggly to be held very much, and most do not care to be handled at all. Plus, they only live about a year , and they usually get icky tumors before they die. No more mice for me. Maybe I'll get a hamster next. I can't have ratties because I don't have enough time for them....they can't live in a cage all the time like hamsters can.

Re: New addition!

I've never had good luck with rats. When I was in the 5th grade the science teacher had some and they were really nice and one of them crawled up on the back of my neck and pee'd and pooped on me.

Re: New addition!

Willowy, I dont know what you are talking about mice make great pets IMO. Mine were great, I miss them so much. Mars and Marbles, I got them from a breeder. They were brown and the other brown and white. Then I got another (Cookies and Cream aka C.C., can you guess what colors he was?) and I loved them all. They would give me butterfly kisses with their whiskers, if I kept up on the cage cleaning they were not smelly. I would give them baths though, with the cat and dog shampoo. We ended up with babies and kept a few of them. I dont think you want to know what ended up happening to some of them Mar's survived and lived the longest though.

I love mice, I know rats are great too but IMO mice are better pets. I guess it's just a difference in "taste".

Beautiful rat, crzybrit. I hope he is settling in nicely.

Re: New addition!

SLK: He's doing much better now so we may be getting a second one soon!

I had a mouse before I got Dwight. His name was Dumbledore and he was really friendly, but much more scared of people than rats are. Unfortunately he didn't live very long and we had to put him to sleep. He had a rare kind of mites that we tried to treat but when they continued to get worse we decided it was best to say good bye and it was obvious that he was in pain. Poor boy!

I was worried to get a rat because I know they are highly susceptible to tumors and cancer. I read in several places that male rats are MUCH less likely to get cancer and tumors at a young age though...so hopefully he will be with us for a while.

He has a massive tank too so he seems to really like it...plus he gets to come out and play a lot!
