I have a 8 month year old red-eared slider named Jayden. He is so adoreable.

Re: Meet My Turtle

He's so cute! Where did you get him? I like RES, but I'm not up for the care that aquatic turtles need....they're a lot more work than land tortoises. I have 4 Russian Tortoises.

How big of a tank do you have? Females will need a 125g minimum when they're full grown, males need at least a 75g. They get quite large, and it doesn't take too long, either.

I rescued him at a college, (V.V.C) I have a small tank, but I am going to get a costom built tank sometime. I noticed he is getting bigger. I am hoping to get a female this year. Jayden is about 8 months old, he'll be 1 year old on Sept.23.

Re: Meet My Turtle

Was he incubated especially to be a male? It's impossible to tell their gender at that size. My Russian Tortoise male was 3 years old before I could tell that he was a he. I don't want to be picky, but I'd hate for you to be disappointed if he turned out to be a she .

Re: Meet My Turtle

On of the funniest things I ever saw is when my dog found a turtle with a 6 inch shell on one of our walks.. she had no idea what to make of it but was VERY interested.. she cautiously approached and danced around it. She barked to see if it reacted. She poked and prodded it, and tried to pick it up.. “enough fun” I told her, as we left it on the side of the road and continued our walk.

The nails don't start to grow out on males untill they are around 5" or bigger ever. There also is not a concavity in a sliders shell like a tortoise would have. If you are planning to get a girl for breeding and not just a companion, I, and the rest of the pet trade really wish you wouldn't. Just be happy that your hatchling has lived so far. So many of these guys die before their first b-day even with correct care.

You should see the amount of unwanted sliders of all ages and sizes dumped everywhere on a daily basis. Including into the enviroment. Please don't contribute to the problem, it really is a staggering one.

If you get a female you will be breeding them, you can't stop them. A male slider will breed with anything he can tack his tail up to and a female will cycle even without a male present.

Just make sure she has a laying "beach" ( waterland tubs makes a good one) to deposit the eggs or she will just have them in the water as a last resort, this is very distressing to the female. (and they will eat them, don't know if your into that lol) or worse become egg bound (not common in sliders tho).
