Other PetsEven though this is Dog Forums, not everyone can limit thier love to just dogs. This is your outlet to talk about other pets you may have or want and questions about them!
I'll see if I can get a better video of her moving tomorrow. She has nice suspension in her trot and her canter/gallop is a pleasure to see. I'm beginning to wonder if this is a quality horse...? I hope some nice people show up for her, or none at all.
Ok, have not yet slept since getting up at 6:30 am yesterday morning. Left here last night, got home(300' walk) She was beginning to colic. Walked her from 11 pm to 7 am. Never became a full blown case.
She was still willing to eat but refusing water and was straining to poop. So off we went. I think I nearly walked her feet off. I know mine are gone. Managed to find a vet willing to come see her today(miracle) AND friend from the humane society brought him here.(He doesn't have a car) Gave her pain meds and declared it a mild case of colic. Heart and gut sounds good. She pooped 4 x through the night. I'm pretty sure we walked over 10 miles last night. He agrees she may have parasites as well and authorized Equvlan at half dosage.
10 mins after pain meds she accepted water for the first time since last night.YAY!!!
I'm so glad I went home late last night. If I'd gone home earlier I might have missed the signs. At first she was just being a little clingy. I thinks it's good I'm such a paranoid freak.
Tomorrow, I'll be able to buy hay. For now, we're tying her out in the toughest oldest highest grass we can find. (which is probably her normal diet) I HATE TYING HORSES!!!
What do you think I should do for tonight? I could put her up under my house, which is enclosed with a 3' wall and cement floor so no grazing, or put her in the small pen which has short grass. The only other option is tying her out on a rope, and I don't think I can stay up another whole night.
I have to make dog food, and feed the neglected dogs, then I'm going to crash. I have one of my staff watching her continuously while I'm not there.
Oh Chrissy, I would have been worried sick. I am so glad you were able to get a vet out to see her, it really is luck she found you.
Good thing he is working on the parasites, she looked a bit bloated to me.
Just keep doing what you are now(the only thing you can do), did the vet recommend where to put her tonight? I wish I could be more of help.
About walking her, definitely get her up if she colics again...however, don't tire her out too much...she needs her strength to deal with it too. Stress mixed with feed change is probably the culprit. If you can, try to let her graze same time everyday. Keep her in a routine, horses seem to do best when they eat same time everyday.
Keep us updated on this little one. I loved the video of her, she is completely in the 'sponge' stage of learning about the world.
I'm still here, just finished dog food, and can't go to sleep, because those stupid overfed DOGS are barking at the STUPID horse. Where's that debarking thread? I need a vet source.

She never even went down. Not even a roll. I caught it really early.(paranoia is a godsend) She was just starting to bloat up and get tender in the belly. She laid down twice this morning but they were tired want to rest my feet downs.

Glad to hear that she seems to be pulling out of it; For mild colic, before a vet arrives you can try giving her mineral oil...that will help get things moving; just syringe what she will accept into her mouth.
Great video too...definitely a young baby!!! Such a beauty!!! I'm coming to steal her...moihahahahahaha!!!
Forgot to mention, I got 1/2 a pint of veg oil down her at 2 am. I called my Mom, woke her up and made her go to the kitchen to bring me a bottle full. She was pleased. NOT.
Ok, still haven't been to sleep. Drawing on my many years of practice. So that's what all those blurry nights were for
Took pics, will upload later. She's seeming comfortable right now. I have her locked under my house so she can't graze. When I left, she was in classic comfort position. Ears flopped out, one back leg cocked up and shot hip. She hasn't pooped since 7 am though which has both me and the doc worried. Ergo locked up under the house. Her appetite was good all day. We had her on coarse tall grass called sacate. It's very low protien, low carb, high roughage. Why haven't I seen ANY POOP Dammit?!?
Anyone else ever experience this with a horse? The not pooping after colic, I mean. She's been drinking water all day too. The vet told me to withhold all food and give as much water as wanted.
Forgot to say, if I let her out right now she'd start eating. IDK Weirdest case of colic I've heard of yet, although this is my first direct exp with it.

Notice, the hot water heater is unhooked and turned off. I have given up hot showers for this girl. Oh the sacrifices.
The face of relaxation.
BTW all night last night as I was walking her and tying her to tree after tree to try and get her to eat rough grass in the dark, she would flip back her ears, and turn her butt to me. UhOH. Scoot.Right?
She did it again while I was sitting on a plastic chair under my house, she was being really lovey so I thought well... what's the worst that could happen?
LOL She backed up to me and rubbed her bum on me. That's all. Is that a her quirk or do a lot of foals do that? I have never been around foals so this is all new to me.
She may be too small to ride... but boy she's just the right size to fall in love with. What an absolute darling.
She looks like a yearling in those pictures, maybe a coming two year old. Are you sure of her age? Based on teeth? Her tail is all rubbed off at the base suggesting a nice bit of worms. Have you wormed her yet? To help with that mix a solution of baby oil and Listerine and apply to the tail and rub in. It kind of stops the itch (after worming of course) Helps the hair to regrow and smooth out. What did you name her? She is truly just the right size to love on and would make a cute cart pony too.
Picking up wormer tomorrow. The vet told me to give her just over 1/2 dose to start and worm again in a week. How much do you think she weighs? I have no idea. I've only ever had BIG horses. I'll be getting a proper halter as well. AND a hoof pick. Hay, and a lead... the list is growing. Watch someone come for her in the morning.
ETA: So that's why she's rubbing her bum. I wondered why she had no hair on the top of her tail... never seen that before.
I have NO idea on the age. I just know she's younger than seven. Her front teeth are really worn, but vet said that because of the coarse feed, that is common. Even in very young horses.

That has got to be one of the cutest babies I have seen . She looks much better built in these then your original pictures. What a happy girl she is now
I agree with Inga, I really don't see her being older then a yearling. Did the vet give a guess on her age?
Sounds like you are the happy new owner of a horse, Chrissy
ETA: Don't answer about the age, I see you just updated your post.
