BANANAS! I never thought of that. Horses here don't like carrots.

Hardly anyone here uses hay. They just started making hay a couple years ago. Everyone just ties them out to eat grass.
How about apples?

Have you put any found ads up anywhere?
That's why so far she's only gotten what she can graze. As for found ads, if I put those up, I'll have everyone from 10 villages coming to claim her. I'm going to wait and see if anyone comes looking for a horse and see if the horse shows any recognition. I'll call the cops on Tuesday.

Close as I can figure going by past experience, someone tied her out and left for easter holidays.

I do have some tall grass growing close to my fence I may take her and tie her there for a couple hours and sit and watch her. I only have a hand tied halter so I'm not completely trusting of it.

We only get apples here rarely. They're usually $1.50 each.

Re: I have a Horse.

I would worry about colic with any new feed. However, a small amout of oats(i.e 1/2 cup) once, then twice a day will probably not hurt her. Start small with the amount. I really wouldn't worry about founder with the oats at this point. Rolled oats with some carrots is not sweet enough, especially if you feed her small amounts right now.

I agree about cut grass. I would just let her graze that.

Do you have any salt blocks or sugar cubes? May make her feel better to lick some.

ETA: If you have tall grass, then I would just let her graze on that. Just don't let her overdo(I know mine would!)

Re: I have a Horse.

Ok, just got a call from the vet. She's a little more up on horse care here.

She thinks oats would be too rich. She recommended corn, which I don't have any of. She said to just hang on to her and wait to see if anyone comes looking.

If no one shows up after a certain period, I have the right to demand payment for maintenance.

Course the last time I had a horse and tried that, the police said I had to release the horse or risk being charged. That guy was connected though. It's all who you know or who you've paid off here.

I felt so sorry for that little guy. We caught him four different times and had to keep giving him back. He was a little stallion, and they were keeping him in a herd with a BIG stallion. A reall sweetie. He used to follow me around too. He was even smaller than this one. Maybe 12.2hh and was always showing up with kicks and bites from the big guy. ugh. don't get me started. I don't know how many times the whole herd would show up here. Always at night and always looking for water. The property where they had them had no water.

Are you serious? Even without charging him for caring for the horse, you would think he would have given a 'reward' anyway...you did save the horse

Alright, rolled oats out the window. I would just let her do what she is doing now then. Not much else you can do. She probably thinks she is having a great adventure right now.

Have you tried a banana? That is interesting about your horses and carrots. Rhiatta had no idea what to do with the 'orange' food until he saw the other horses eating one, then he decided...well better try it. He ended up loving it.

ETA: I thought I would mention, I am rather jealous of how her coat looks, nice and 'summery'. I just did a spring grooming of my two yesterday, and really regretted not having a face mask. The wind blew one, too many hair clumps into my mouth.

Re: I have a Horse.

That stallion? I had him for 6 weeks once. The owners never did come looking.
I ended up naming him Oreo because he liked cookies. I wish I had a picture to show you. I think he might have been a Shetl x Cob. He was a dappled dun I think. All kind of beigeish. Body mane tail. Everything. He even got along with my peccary.

Re: I have a Horse.

Chrissy, he sounds like he was a cutie! Sometimes, these animals come to you for a reason

There is an idiot horse owner in my area that has had AC called on him a few times. He doesn't give water during the winter because he thinks the can eat the snow and be fine. I wonder if people like him think I am nuts when I had to break the ice covering the horses water throughout the day prior to getting a water heater.

He called a few week ago to get the number to my vet, one of his horses was down. His story went like such, horse was down in the morning. He got it standing, left for work, and came home and found it down again. So he then decided to call for a vet(why he doesn't have a number for one, beats me). I don't know what happened to the horse...just sad.

Re: I have a Horse.

I know, some people should be put down.

I've downloaded the relevant sections of applicable law and I have to go and make a report at the police station within a "reasonable time". If nobody shows up to claim the horse within a "reasonable time" the horse is mine. I also have to post a description of said animal at the courts.

8.-(1) Any person may seize any cattle found trespassing in his house or on
his land, and secure it in any public pound or, if there is no public pound within
three miles of the scene of trespass then, in any private pound or place of
security, and keep it until satisfaction is made for such trespass in manner hereinafter
provided.
(2) The party seizing and impounding any cattle in any private pound as
provided by this section, shall make within a reasonable time complaint of such
trespass to a magistrate and, until an order is made by that magistrate, treat the
animal so impounded with reasonable care, supply it with food and water proper
for its sustenance, and protect it from ill-usage.

13.-(1) The keeper of every public pound whenever and as often as any cattle
are impounded therein shall within twenty-four hours of such impounding affix
a notice on some conspicuous part of the pound setting forth a description of
the cattle impounded, or in his possession, and such notice shall remain so
posted until such cattle are claimed or otherwise disposed of in due course
of law.

Re: I have a Horse.

She is a cutie. Looks pretty young. Maybe she would make a nice cart horse. Looks cared for her feet are not bad at all. Hopefully her owner can find her, they must be worried sick.

Re: I have a Horse.

Just thinking the person that takes time to either trim hooves or have a farrier out hopefully will be looking. Like you said.... In a perfect world. If not, what a great playmate for your dogs. LOL The tourists will probably get a kick out of taking their pictures with her.

Re: I have a Horse.

Her hooves do look really good. The fact that I can't find ONE tick is surprising as well. However, it's Easter. I wouldn't be surprised if they tied her out by a back hoof and went away figuring she'd be fine. What constitutes a good owner here can be very different than first world standards.

She is VERY friendly and not shy, indicating that's she's been handled gently.

I've posted a sign as per the law's requirement. This being the "pound" I'll be going to notify a magistrate on Tues or Wed depending on when the courts reopen after the Easter break.

An old ice pick, just don't be too aggressive with it.

I'd put notices out that she's been found with the local Vets.

A flat end screw driver bent over is just like a hoof pick.

Re: I have a Horse.

I did end up using a screw driver. She pulled a little on the back feet, but all in all she was a very good girl. They look good. Frog's a little soft, but no "off" smells. They'll dry out good now that they're clean. If no one shows up in the next 3 or 4 days, what is a good insect repellent? Any suggestions? I'm going to get a hoof pic and a couple brushes as I've recently decided to get a horse or two anyway. I'll be able to use them regardless.

She likes to play TAG. She had me running around my yard like a crazy person. It was a lot of fun. I felt like the" flying dutchman". Look for me soon at your local ag center. LOL

Re: I have a Horse.

Neem is a good insect repellant, as is Geranium and Cat Nip. In fact Cat Nip has been proven more effective than DEET at keeping mosquitos away.

Re: I have a Horse.

WE have GIGANTIC horseflies. I think they're on steroids. I'll look out for Neem on Tues.

ETA: THANKS for all the help and advice from all you horse people. It's been 17 years since I last "officially" cared for a horse. I'm WAY outdated and out of practice. The basics come back, but I'm woefully behind on all the new stuff.

She looks to be about a year old...she's adorable!!! If ya can't keep her you can send her my way...Lol!!!!

Apple Cider Vinegar makes a good natural repellent...AND if you feed it, as well as spray\wipe it on, it has health benefits besides...
